I recently acquired a Schatz 49 400 day clock- and it has a pendulum lock that I can't figure out!!

It looks like a sliding brass tube with what looks like 3 brass claws on the lower end.

Does anyone know how this locking mechanism is supposed to work?

A picture might help us see what you're seeing. But if I had to guess, that is not much of a pendulum lock but once the pendulum is removed, those "claws" are slid down to engage the bottom block and keep it safe.

That's unusual- because Schatz 400 day clocks are known for having elaborate locking feature(s) for immobilizing the pendulum.

Can't say as I've seen a pendulum lock for a Schatz 49 clock. Now Kundos do have a nice lock for the pendulum. Maybe that's what you're remembering.

The Schatz Jum7, 1000day and some of the 53's have a pendulum lift system in the base that locks very well.

If that one were used as a pendulum lock, it would apply too much pressure to the suspension spring. In turn, it could break, or the top block might slip off. As stated, use it to stabilize the spring when moving the clock, but remove the pendulum.
