• Upcoming updates
    Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

    If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

I know that Rolex made a few quartz models in the past. Is there anyway to determine authentic from fake? Are the quartz movements marked Rolex, etc?

Thanks,
Doug

Doug,

Of all the quartz fake Rolex watches I have seen, most of them have resembled the style of the Date-Just or Day-Date. Except of course in the lady's fake models where the styles tend to be more diverse. The gent's Oyster-Quartz was quite a different looking watch to the Oyster-Date and Date-Just. It was not a popular style with Rolex as I recall. I doubt any counterfeiter would try to be so true to the original Rolex look that he would copy a style that was never very popular. This doesn't likely help you much, but if you were to pop by your local Rolex dealer and check out the Oyster-Quartz in a catalog, I think you'd see what I mean.

Thanks Doug;

I have a customer wanting to sell me one. Very thin, rectangular case and dial, with diamonds(?) surrounding the bezel. The gentleman does not wish me to remove the back, which makes me nervous, unless I have more or less committed to purchase!

Doug,

If the watch is that accessible to you, can you tell him you'd like to photograph it and post the picture on this message Board, (even if you don't happen to own a digital camera or a scanner)? If the watch is a fraud, that'd likely smoke him out! Of course, there is a danger he might call your bluff if he really thinks it's real. Or you might ask him to accompany you to a local gemmologist for an opinion on the "diamonds". Ask him for its pedigree (registration, warranty, receipt from a legitimate dealer showing the serial number). You'll scare him off, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Sure don't sound anything like any bonafide Rolex I ever saw!

My suggestion is to buy a watch in person and bring it to an authorized Rolex Service dealership only. A reputable knowledge of individual would help as well. Caliber for example on OysterQuartzis 5055 can be seen by a loupe once it's opened. Do not overlook the bracelet and its hallmarks as well as the clasps,dial,crown,etc.
Hope that helps.
