Hello. I believe I’m picking this clock up this afternoon for what I think is a fair price. It says Riley Whiting Winchester on the face. From what I’m seeing and have read, these are a wooden works with weights clock. The photos I received show the movement is not wooden and doesn’t have weights, but it sure looks like it is the correct movement based on the placement of the second hand and calendar dial. Does this clock appear to be in original condition with the proper movement? Are the three chimneys on top of the hood original, they almost look out of place to me. The hands don’t seem as ornate as the others I’m seeing online. Maybe it’s a later clock assembled after his passing?

I have examined carefully the pictures you have provided.

The movement is absolutely incorrect and an incorrect replacement for the original wooden works. It is a spring driven brass works with the plates held together with nuts striking on a coiled wire gong. These are characteristics of a later 19th - early 20th century mass produced movement. There is clearly much "new wood" added behind the dial to accommodate the movement.

Even without peeking behind the dial, there are clear indications of trouble.

Note the faux winding holes along with later holes drilled in the dial.

I won't comment any further re: the hands, case, etc.

If you like it and it is REAL cheap, buy it.

However, you can obtain a relatively intact wooden works tall case clock for a reasonable price these days. My advice is to buy one of those and not this.

it is possible that the clock may not be in its original condition, as the movement doesn't seem to match the typical wooden works with weights that the Riley Whiting Winchester clocks are known for. The three chimneys on top of the hood may or may not be original, as clock makers sometimes added decorative elements to clocks. The less ornate hands could also indicate a later clock or a different model. It is best to consult with a clock expert or appraiser for a more accurate assessment of the clock's condition and value.

More than possible.

There's no need to pay a fee to an appraiser to figure this one out.

Just for comparison, I recently bought a clock from about 1780, with a quality Engish movement, without any faults, everything as authentic as one would expect (there never is 100% certainty), running perfectly, delivered for free over 600 km, for less than 700 €. This is no "peanuts", of course, but a much better value for money, even in case that you get this clock for 100 € only.

The movement spells "trouble", these typically are designed for a liftime of less than 50 years and often require extensive repairs nowadays. That would imo make sense only, if the whole clock were authentic.

Best, Bernhard
