We recently got a grandfather clock off of someone on Facebook. The clock does work!!! It is supposed to chime on the hour, quarter past, half past and quarter to. The problem is it doesn’t chime correctly. It is about 4 minutes behind the marks when it is supposed to chime. And it is not chiming the correct chime. Like it is supposed to play the full chime on the hour but it is playing the full chime quarter to or quarter past the hour. How do I fix this:???:? Please help!!! It is a Ridgeway “D” movement. Pics are included. The woman said it is complete and nothing missing.

The next time it strikes the full 16 notes chime and then the hour strike, take the minute hand off and put it back on pointing at the 12 position. . the next chime should be 4 notes.

A picture of the movement will be needed if this does not correct your issue.

The minute hand might have a movable bushing that can be turned slightly to have the minute hand pointing at the mark. Be careful to not distort the rectangular slot in the bushing - that's what positions it on the shaft.
My understanding is that the first STRIKE of the hour (not the earlier chimes) designates the 'zero minute'.

If the chime sequence is not correct, that might mean the chime mechanism (drum wheel) needs to be realigned.

Technically, Jay is correct about the first strike timing, which is how Big Ben functions. However I always set them to start the chime at the hour mark. The tail of a file will fit into the minute hand and allow you to turn it so it starts at the right time. Turn at the base so you don't bend the hand.
