I have an Ingraham movement that is in beat, cleaned and oiled. It will run for a short time then stop. Attached are a couple of pictures of the escapement wheel both sides. One side has been staked by a former repairman and is worn oval. The other side is worn oval as well. Would this cause the problem? The side that was staked is in bracket that is riveted to the front plate. How is this replaced? Any help woulld be appreciated. Thanks...Paul

If the movement was staked while together ,it may have bent the pivot.take it apart and check the pivots and polish them and bush. This may help you acomplish your problem.

Also check the saddle on the verge, it may also need to be bushed.Make sure the metal wirer that holds the verge on has good clearance and is not rubbing.

"Would it cause this problem"? Sure. But so would a number of other things. You must go through a normal diagnosis. The verge is outside the plates. It's so easy I would remove it and check the train for power losses.

He has to start some place.I think to much at once might overwhelm him. There some other things to look at after he gets past the ones, I have aproached thus far.And yes there are alot of things to consider just to name a few.He would have to understand what a normal diagnosis is.Like check if the movement has the least amount of friction with no power from the spring,Just by hand,is another step.

Thanks for all the responses. The pivot on the escapement and one other wheel were bent just enough to cause the problem. I must have used a little too much energy when putting it back togeather. Pivots straightened and polished and it runs just perfect. Now that it is running properly should it get new bushings? Thanks again to everyone. Paul

Yes, I would replace that escape wheel bushing. It is pretty worn and could cause the problem that you just had. For roughly $100 bucks you can purchase the tools and a selection of bushings. Vernon

Yes, if you plan to run the clock it should be rebushed. Doesn't take to much movement of the escapewheel, on this mvt, to upset the escapement action. Also, this much 'punching' almost has to have caused furthur trouble: bent bridge, battered pivots, bent pivots, etc.

I agree with the advise to bush. Maybe you can find a member in your area who would let you look over his shoulder or use his tools to do your first bushing. Also, you could ask him to show you how to bush by hand to save some money until you get more experience.

Good to hear you found the problem. And yes I would bush the movement.Damge to the pivot can happen from a punched movement.Even after you have polished the pivots the bearing surface can still do damaged to the pivot if the surface is jagged .I have always found it to be common practice to replace all punched bearing services regardless. Thus in the long run the movement will last much longer, and you will have the least amout of friction required.

If you were by me I could teach you to bush.

I concur... if the holes have been punched, your best bet is to put a bushing in, to restore the bearing surface.

I also concur, but this high up in the train, at the escape wheel arbor, there really isn't a lot of pressure on the pinion, so if he keeps it clean and oiled, I see no reason not to run and enjoy the clock until he finds one of those elusive round tuits.
