I have the second edition which was dated 1988 so is now 23 years old. That makes it ancient history considering the rate of change with electronics.
I hesitate to give an opinion since quartz watches have little interest to me but the coverage of the history and contemporary watches of that time seems very well done. If one is starting the first section billed as an "Basic course in electricity and electronic horology" is very helpful in dealing with the early electric clocks that we are faced with repairing today and would likely appear so to watch repairers.
The book is hard bound with 248 pages letter size.
The table of contents follows:
INTRODUCTION
1. A WATCHMAKER’S GUIDE TO ELECTRICITY
II. ABOUT WATCH BATTERIES
III. NOW, ABOUT VOLTS
IV. MORE ON METERS AND THEIR USES
V. EARLY ELECTRIC TIMEPIECES—HOW AND WHY THEY WORKED

I too have the '88 edition, which appears to be the most recent. I have used it to become just slightly familiar with the workings of quartz movements. In most cases (no pun intended), if the quartz movement fails, and a good replacement is available, that's what will be done, commercially at least.

I've read that sometimes movements can be "reanimated" by using a tool stimulates a movement to run rapidly, thereby freeing up a stubborn movement. I have not tried it, but it sounds logical.

I have a friend who is involved commercial watch repair. He told me that the Fried book is the best one out there. If you can find it for a decent price, buy it. I don't think that you can go wrong. Some electronics background would be helpful, which is something I have very little of. Good luck.

I think it's a decent book. It directs you ti finding the possible faults and types of repairs. It has allowed me to start diagnosing some of the quartz watches I have laying around. I still don't have much interest in repairing quartz watches, but I can now diagnose the few that I have an interest in. Prior to reading this book I was stuck at replacing the movement, but some movements are no longer readily available. There aren't very many books available on the topic that I am aware of.
