• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

Repair/Parts for Elgin Bombadier Stop-watch?

Well, I think that's what it is. One local and one online repair shop said simply "no parts."

Watch winds and when stem is depressed, there is a continuous "whirring" sound. Crystal and second hand are missing. Smaller minute hand does not move. A second press of the stem does not stop the movement, but a third press does.

Can anyone tell me what this timepiece is and for what and when it might have been used? Is repair feasible? Suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Yup, that's an Elgin "Jitterbug", and it sounds like yours works. There are tons of links about it if you google it. Parts movements are somewhat(?) available. I may have found hands for them before, but don't quote me, and obviously they just take a pocket watch crystal of the correct size. They're danged interesting devices to work on and are a heckuva good way to learn about the whole balance-wheel-versus-hairspring interaction. I have three? four? of them. If you need someone to work on it, send me a PM.

The photos might be deceiving but the hand post seems to be missing, I wonder if the post has been broken off/away from the cam actuator under the dial?

Bila,

Quite so. Whoever dropped this watch and destroyed the crystal also took out the second hand and the post on which it was mounted.
