Hi,

I have an Ansonia A28 movement that has the mainspring in a barrel. I have a Ollie Baker style mainspring winder but I cannot put the sleeve over the mainspring because the wheel is in the way. (see pictures) I thought about purchasing winding arbors to use to wind the spring but I checked Timesavers, Merritts and a few others and they are all too big (7mm) my winding arbor is 4.8mm. I briefly tried to remove the mainspring with needle nose pliers and heavy gloves by trying to start to unwind the mainspring but was not successful. Does anybody have any idea how I can remove the mainspring?

Thanks in advance,

Ronnie

I use spare winding arbors with no wheel. The Ollie Baker comes with a large hose clamp to clamp around the barrel and a post that catches the clamp screw as you wind it.

You can make any size winding arbor you need. It usually takes a short length of 3/16" or 1/4" mild steel rod with a 1/16" hole drilled through it. Tap in a soft steel pin and mushroom the tip a bit to make the hook. File the shaft's end to square and your done.

Note, a mushroomed pin will work in either direction.

You may want to look up 'replacing spring S-T 124'. This is the same deal but for a much more popular movement.

I will save it incase I need it again.
