Regula vs Hubert Herr chain

Hi people, I have a question that has been bugging me since I started working on these cuckoo clocks. Can Regula chains be used on a Hubert Herr cuckoo clock? There is such a little difference in them but I have always heard you can't switch them. Well I just put a Regula chain on a Hubert Herr movement and ran it through all the way with a 320 weight and it works perfectly, no binding or skipping or anything different than if it was on a Regula movement. I actually don't remember where I originally heard that you can't switch them, so I just want to put this question to bed for good. Thank you in advance for your help. T.K.

I think the older HHs took a slightly smaller chain size. I will check and report back. Willie X

OK thank you. I don't know, I have been running a H.H. cuckoo with the Regula chains all day and no problems. T.K.

OK, we can just leave it at that. Save me from dragging out the ole notebooks. :) Willie X

1 day Regula chains will work a HH 1 day movement, however going on memory I think the 8 day movement will not, maybe tomorrow if I can find them in my junk pile I will check, if I remember that is!

Hello T.K.

According to my paper Timesavers catalogue:

Herr 1 day: 59 l/ft
Herr 8 day: 45 l/ft

Regula 1 day: 61 l/ft
Regula 8 day: 48 l/ft (1.20 mm)

Timesavers also has a 48 l/ft chain at 1.05 mm which is what they send on their new 8 day movements. I believe it has been reported on this message board that the heavier (1.20 mm) chain is causing problems with some Regula 8 day movements.

The Herr 8 day that is presently on my bench has 44 l/ft (not the prescribed 45). My chain may be a little stretched.

Since you put a Regula 61 on a Herr movement requiring a 59, your 61 might be a little stretched and therefore has effectively fewer links per foot so that it can work on the Herr.

Jim
