I have this verge escapement clock made by George Clarke of London, probably 1780 or so. It has a rope drive but within the rope is a fine chain. I have never seen that before - is it common? It is one of the 'Turkish' clocks made for the Islamic nations. A rather high number if these clocks seem to turn up in the UK rather than in Turkey, Egypt etc. Is it known whether they were marketed in the home market?
PS - the large engraved brass piece above the top finial is a brass lamp that just happened to be in the background, not part of the clock.
