I am reassembling a late 18th century verge watch, and I need some advice. The barrel, chain and fusee cone are all in good shape, and the train runs smoothly. The crown wheel spins freely, and as almost no lateral play. My question concerns the correct orientation of the balance. I had assumed that the optimum position would be with the crown wheel shaft exactly splitting the angle between the pallet flags, but this appears to be wrong. What is the best orientation of the balance for efficient operation of a verge watch? Thanks for any advice you can provide.
