Hi all
I have a pultra 1750 lathe made in Manchester UK to restore, and I am having trouble finding out the paint code for the cream colour, I was wondering if anyone would know.
Thanks in advance Dell

This link may help Texture Paint Identification | Model Engineer
Within it someone is saying the colour is close to a Myford lathe colour with a link to the website that has that paint and others which may be an even closer match?
Thanks for that unfortunately it doesn’t give a paint code as I want to paint it with 2K because once it has cured nothing will affect it.

congrats on acquiring a very high quality little lathe. I've got one and there fantastic.

are you experienced with 2k paints? if so, sorry for signing to choir, if not, be really careful. Many (most, all?) of the 2 part polyurethanes have isocyanates which are nasty and can have some serious medical ramifications if not painted properly (e.g. positive pressure suit etc). I just went through this at work, its not always obvious on the MSDS which chemicals are isocyanates or other nasties.

As for colour, do you have any part of it with the original paint? Paint stores can scan a sample and suggest something....just not sure if you can get decent paint from them nowadays, e.g. oil based if you're not a business.

I've been using PPG Line 7 a fair bit. Its a pricy enamel but is good to work with. I thin it for spraying and mix with a bunch of talc to take away most of the gloss

When I did my Boley 83 I mixed my own paint. Bought green yellow black and white Tremclad and played around until I got something I liked. I developed a new respect for artists - it was really hard to get the DIY colour to match the Boley original.

The other paint I like is PPG Line 7. Its a pricey enamel but is good to work with. I thin it and spray and mix with a bunch of talc to take away most of the gloss

Hi measuretwice
I work for a coach company with 100 coaches and I run the bodyshop so am used to using 2K , it’s not as nasty as it used to be but still nasty, it’s always worth a mention, yes I can probably get a RAL close match with a scan but it’s easier with a paint code.

lol, that's not just any choir, that's the Monteverdi Choir....you can give me lesson on painting. Well, at least some unsuspecting sort who might have read this has the heads up.

I manufacture machinery so we paint a lot and have had to stop using paints with greater than 1% isocyanates. You probably have the set up for it, but here it requires a sealed booth, regular medical checkups for the painter, positive pressure suit and so on. Even with a so-so booth, half the time the stuff we paint is too big (such as silos or we just did a 110' long 80 ton bridge crane) so there is no choice but to paint (off shift) in the general shop area.

I won’t paint a whole coach, we farm that out, the drivers we have are crap so they bend them faster than we can repair them anyway I should have retired 5 years ago and I have two apprentice so I leave the painting to them these days good practice for them .

Well lathe turned up today what a bonus turns out the Pultra 17/50 is 17/70. Result.
Looks a bit tatty but that’s only cosmetic headstock turns very smooth and no play , just need to strip it down clean it up and get it painted, it’s also got quick close drawbar not sure how that works.

The slides and tailstock look like they are shop made or possibly from another manufacturer and were modified to fit as they are not in any of the Pultra catalogs which I have seen. I have used a rustoleum cream color to match some of my accessories as I began to put together a kit, but recently have just embraced the harlequin variety of colors these tools come in. I would say your best bet if you're going to fully paint everything is to pick a color you like and is easy to source in the future if you end up needing a milling spindle, vertical slide, turret, grinding spindle, dividing head or any of the other accessories which come up down the road. Also, I hope you have collets!

Hi tie.smed
I have already decided to paint it in the last colour that was used when Smart & Brown took them over Reseda green RAL 6011 as that’s the only code I can find, I have spoken to Tony at lathes.co.uk and he said that he is fairly sure that the tailstock is a genuine Pultra but made by them for a customer’s special specs, it is screw feed and has a MT 1 taper, as for the crosslide it is Pultra but again modified.

The drawbar on yours looks a little different to mine, seems to extend further back and doesn't have a knureld outer surface. Maybe it had some sort of automatic bar feed attached? Anyhow, there should be a sprung ball inside which rides over the grooves in the mandrel piece as you screw on to the collet/chuck. I generally tighten on to the collet with the quick release lever pushed left (ie in the tighten position) until I feel resistance. Then move the lever right and turn the drawbar one or two more 'clicks' and that is usually just right to hold the work or chuck tight when the lever is moved left again.

Hi SKennedy
Yes my one does look different but then the tailstock and crosslide are different as well I have taken the quick close apart for cleaning and painting and have found that there is not a full circle of ball bearings and I can’t see that it would only use half the amount but luckily I have managed to find some .
Some parts cleaned up and painted in the very last original colour that was used by Pultra Reseda green RAL 6011.
