Proper name of venting on clocks ?

What is the correct name for the open side venting seen on what seems to be primarily European clocks such as finer 19th c. bracket clocks. I assume these vents are for allowing the resonance of chimes to be more openly heard.

Frets is what they are normally called over here. Also sound frets, and fretwork side panels. False ones for decoration only are called blind frets. You get them on longcase clocks too. They don't just occur on the sides, you can have them on the front, they are usually backed by a piece of coloured silk.
