3333-7.jpg This is not a rare photograph, it's from the street´s of Liverpool in the mid 19th century. Above and below in the sections Burials we see how fragile children were at that time. The list of disease that took these children is too long for this piece- though I hope we can understand in this time of Covid-19.

Below is a slip-up, it´s about cheap labour in the same period we are looking at, and though its the material workers, the same apply to the watch trade. So I will leave it here, and carry on with 1770.

y-34.png I have put this map of Liverpool, on here, to give some atmosphere to the time the below would have lived and worked, and that it was not all gloom. The large Building on the right is the famous customs house finished in 1836, and on the right St Georges church, which was built on top of the ruins of Liverpool Castle, later the sight of the Queen Victoria monument.

Congratulations, Allan, on another valuable project. Will it be issued as a single document when complete?

Oliver Mundy.
Thank you, Oliver, I think when finished, I will put it together, and the first copy will be yours. Could take a while, other things take my time as well, though this is great fun.

Is there anyone who knows what a MUGGER was in the UK at the period we are working on. It keeps coming up on the lists, and Web will only say the obvious, a criminal of all sorts, not someone's job.

Regards,

Allan.

Mugger = A hawker of earthenware - is that a reasonable profession for someone in Lancashire during this period?

EARLY LANCASHIRE WATCH FUSEE ENGINES PART 1.
BY
P. H. J. Baker
(AHS Spring 1994)

Summary.

"The eighteenth-century watch fusee engines described in this article are essentially a specialised form of a screw-cutting lathe. They were used to cut the fusee groove for the verge watch on prepared blanks, which are described. It is fortunate and remarkable that there are sufficient surviving examples to establish their chronology and identify them with the eighteen-century pattern books of John Wyke and Ford, Whitmore and Brunton. Their mode of operation and features are described and illustrated. Special attention is given to decorative mouldings, the geometry of screw heads and the form and method of manufacture of the screw threads which were used. Since the fusee engine is the only early traditional watch tool employing a lead screw, these are given special attention. The engines described have a characteristic horizontal square or rectangular open mainframe, sometimes with a bow` at the front. The later Lancashire engines constructed on a rectangular flat plate are not dealt with here."

(John Wyke-( c1758-70 Pattern books)
Ford, Whitmore and Brunton c 1780.

"The Revd. William Pearson in Rees´s Cyclopaedia (1801-20) tells us more, "The best watch movements are made in Prescot in Lancashire, by persons called movement makers,
who furnish the movement complete to the London watch-makers".

First-class, Pat I will put a potter come Mugger on the next list. Plus we have your list, now attached. Thank yo

The term mugger also meant 'grinder' which was used to describe the production of grinding materials and also the action of grinding as in the removal of metals and polishing.

(Incidentally I went to school in Prescot)

I can only conclude that the muggers worked in the watchmaking industry because there was very little other industry in Prescot at this time. Most enterprises were just members of the same family offering highly selective products and services to the watchmaking industry. There would be a demand for abrasives for polishing, grinding services for jewels and other hard materials. Later Prescot established BICC , a cable making company and Pilkingtons established a glass making factory that prototyped the float glass system. Dye research was done down the road at Knowsley, Other early industries in the area included coal mining.

Hello, itspcb,

I have just read your post above, and your first sentence makes me wonder if you are reading this thread. We are talking about pre or start of the industrial revolution in the UK, which in the main started in the north of England. Post 27 though I think says it all as regards the industrial revolution, but the people I have listed in the watch industry of that time were in fact only a small percentage of the population. It was later that it grew to its peak a hundred years later. Muggers were too were only a small amount of the population, and they increased along with the watch industry as the population increased. There were only 3000 people in the whole of the Prescot then, and only 34,000 in Liverpool.

Strange that you should mention Pilkington´s, my father spent the last twenty years of his working life as the colour mixing manger there.

Regards,

Allan.

Before going on with 1778. I should mention here, there are between 40-to 50 single lines of information on Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials on each page. (365 in all) Baptisms and Burials taking up most of the pages, as they were the most used each year by the population. I would say that is so today. We are now starting with the year 1778, and as yet the files indicate that Husbandman (Small Farmers) was the most named on all files.

7777-9.jpg When looking for old images from the Victorian age. I have to remember that they were taken some 100 years later than the above, Yet when I am searching through the above book, I have a picture in my mind of those poor children in the1700s working in factories, coal mines. the cotton industry, and even in the watch trade, which is very much the same.

Some times we tend to ignore the world around us, then something happens that gives us another look at the places and lives of the people we have not noticed. The above moved me, maybe you too.

From Memorials of Liverpool by J A Picton, F S A:
"Down to about this time (1818) Liverpool was one of the worst paved towns in the Kingdom. The carriage-ways were pitched with rough boulders. Many of the narrow streets had no foot-ways and were paved in the old continental fashion, with a channel along the middle. Where footways existed, they were paved with small angular pebbles, to which the natives had become hardened but which on strangers produced the most uncomfortable effects. A few cases in which flags had been laid down on the footways were exhibited to strangers as a curiosity. The commissioners of the highways, at last, took heart of grace and began to flag the footways and macadamise some of the principal streets. Church street was the first to have the benefit of the improvement. A few years sufficed to render the town second to none in this department."

Imagine these streets in the dark, on a cold and foggy night?

as a pauper - Deutsch-Übersetzung – Linguee Wörterbuch

It´s now 1874, and we have seen for the first above, the word Pauper used at the Burials. In these cases, it is to show that they were in a situation where their lively hood was always a risk, poor yet not dependent on the state or others. It was about this time that they were allowed to marry and have a family.

Great stuff Allan - a little random but on your topic re Prescot.

Names we recognise?

Well there are some names we recognise there Allan in your list of births and deaths mentioning “watchmakers” - which I am guessing is the point?

" Buried 1782 Joseph Hewitt, E. Watchmaker. (Buried Wife Jane). (Jane Hewitt, died Apr.30 aged 49) "

Hewitt is a name we recognise and is presumably related to THE Thomas Hewitt – the driving force behind the Lancashire Watch Co. of course.

" Edward Prest P. Watchmaker (Baptised Son John Jun 28 1767) "

“Thomas Prest, a Lancashire watchmaker, was apprenticed to John Roger Arnold in 1783 and later made foreman. In 1820, Prest was awarded a patent for his keyless winding system.”

More family histories to research… My limited understanding on other watchmaker families is that like many in the Victorian era they tended to marry in their trade community.

Context re Prescot

I cannot remember how I found it but below/ attached is more colour / context about Prescot in that period for the registers 1766 – 1795.

Here is a photograph below and attached of the workshop of Joseph Preston & Sons from the 1920s. I love the gentlemen working away in their three piece suits and polished capped shoes amongst the almost Dickensian grime of their workshop which looks not to have changed since 1720.

Preston workshop

Perhaps that is the last proprietor Harry Pybus at the bench? – see post here.

English movement & frame makers

This little history “Prescot Watchmaking in the Eighteenth century” – see attached written in 1925 by James Hoult is a fascinating summary of the then known history. Found via the website of the Historic Society of Lancashire and Cheshire. Great photos too.

https://www.hslc.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/77-5-Hoult.pdf

On page 43 the author mentions _ “another watch pinion maker of 1809 mentioned in an indenture is Joseph Hewitt.”

“In Wyke’s day (1780S) Prescot was the market of England for watches.”

“Not merely for money did they work; they strove to enrich the world with things of use and beauty, made as accurate and perfect in every detail as humanly possible”

A Visit to Prescot in 1887

“Having occasion to go to Liverpool on the 11th inst., I took the opportunity of visiting Prescot, which is only eight miles distant.

Starting from the Lime Street Station at 2.45 p.m., I soon found myself in the narrow and unpretending streets of this nursery of English chronometers and watches.

One of my most agreeable recreations, as a child of ten years of age, was the unpacking and sorting out boxes of marine chronometer movements, which had been forwarded from Mr. Preston, of Prescot; and as I grew older, I ventured to take them to pieces, with the friendly assistance of a workman when I came across an unusually difficult screw to get undone.

It was with feelings almost akin to reverence that I saw the names of Eccleston Street, West Street, Atherton Street, Warrington Road etc.

My first call was at Mr. Leyland's, of Atherton Street, from which address I have been obtaining keyless wheels and case pinions for upwards of twenty years, and was now very pleased to make the acquaintance of the family, who received me with such genuine warmth, that I subsequently returned to tea, and beg to again thank them for their kind hospitality through the medium of the JOURNAL, the official organ of the Horological industry. "

Horological Journal December 1887 – extract from letter to the editor from James Poole

Geography of Prescot

Not sure how familiar you are with the geography Allan but Prescot is (well now anyway) a proud independent town (not a village) nine miles from Liverpool. Before the passenger railway it would have been a rare occurrence I think for a watchmaker to visit Liverpool. I am not very familiar with the history but my understanding is that Liverpool did not take off as a town then the city until the building of the docks 1810s - 1830s after your period of births/ deaths. The watch trade may have died in Prescot as elsewhere in the UK in the late nineteenth century but there was plenty of other prosperous industry in near the town of Prescot until the 1970s / 1980s.

Hello Andrew,

The two gentlemen sitting in your photograph above are G.H. Baillie and Prof.Torrance. Both knew quite a bit about Prescot, though I am sure you will find that on the net when you are searching. What you have just put on here is far away from what I am doing at the moment, and believe me, it is not family research. There are eleven years to come yet, I will then summarise what findings are coming out of this effort. I might then know a little about Prescot. All I know at the moment is
if in Worsley turn left on the M62 and follow your nose.

Thanks for the input, Andrew

Allan.
