• Important Executive Director Announcement from the NAWCC

The NAWCC Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Mr. Rory McEvoy has been named Executive Director of the NAWCC. Rory is an internationally renowned horological scholar and comes to the NAWCC with strong credentials that solidly align with our education, fundraising, and membership growth objectives. He has a postgraduate degree in the conservation and restoration of antique clocks from West Dean College, and throughout his career, he has had the opportunity to handle some of the world’s most important horological artifacts, including longitude timekeepers by Harrison, Kendall, and Mudge.

Rory formerly worked as Curator of Horology at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, where his role included day-to-day management of research and digitization projects, writing, public speaking, conservation, convening conferences, exhibition work, and development of acquisition/disposal and collection care policies. In addition, he has worked as a horological specialist at Bonhams in London, where he cataloged and handled many rare timepieces and built important relationships with collectors, buyers, and sellers. Most recently, Rory has used his talents to share his love of horology at the university level by teaching horological theory, history, and the practical repair and making of clocks and watches at Birmingham City University.

Rory is a British citizen and currently resides in the UK. Pre-COVID-19, Rory and his wife, Kaai, visited HQ in Columbia, Pennsylvania, where they met with staff, spent time in the Museum and Library & Research Center, and toured the area. Rory and Kaai will be relocating to the area as soon as the immigration challenges and travel restrictions due to COVID-19 permit.

Some of you may already be familiar with Rory as he is also a well-known author and lecturer. His recent publications include the book Harrison Decoded: Towards a Perfect Pendulum Clock, which he edited with Jonathan Betts, and the article “George Graham and the Orrery” in the journal Nuncius.

Until Rory’s relocation to the United States is complete, he will be working closely with an on-boarding team assembled by the NAWCC Board of Directors to introduce him to the opportunities and challenges before us and to ensure a smooth transition. Rory will be participating in strategic and financial planning immediately, which will allow him to hit the ground running when he arrives in Columbia

You can read more about Rory McEvoy and this exciting announcement in the upcoming March/April issue of the Watch & Clock Bulletin.

Please join the entire Board and staff in welcoming Rory to the NAWCC community.

Hey, if anyone reads this, try to click on the spreadsheet and change some fields. Let me know if you can or can not change something in the file. Please!

I guess you have to have a Google account to see the sheet?

The spreadsheet will send you a message for permission to type anything on it.

The PDF file has to be downloaded to anyones computer to open it.

Let's see if it works
Rick - I just edited the original file via my google account.

I am not exactly certain what you are trying to achieve You can certainly share a simple spreadsheet, that other's can edit

John, thanks

I actually don't want others to be able to edit it. I just accidentally hit accept when your request came through. First time trying to do something like this. Kinda learning as I go. Haha

I believe that browser extensions will allow the file to be opened without going through the download.

The previous version of the software made a jpeg image of pdf files (usually the first page) and then made that image a link to the file itself which opened in a new window like an attachment does. I liked that behavior, but the person who built it retired and no one else wanted to pick up the effort. One of the reasons is that the software that does the image generation has a know security vulnerability.

I did not think it was all that dangerous but most software folks equate security vulnerability with murder and mayhem.

Haha, I don't know what you posted, Tom, but it's definitely not a spreadsheet.

I figured out how to shut off requests to edit and just posted the link in the thread for standard American watch co. It's either working well, or no one looked at it yet, hahahaha. That way someone can look at with without having to download anything, and it will update in real time.

Thanks for taking the time to check in here.

It is the address I found at your Google reference. Can you post a link to something in your Google docs that has view permissions set?

The code I used just shows whatever you address says is there. I have not used Google Docs much so am not really familiar with it.

We have a markup code GVIEW that creates a window to display your Google Docs file. I have not used it, so I do not know why it is not working.

From what I have read so far, the feature requires a file type extension such as .xls. Your reference does not have a file type such as PDF, XLS, DOC...

Rick,
That should work. When I saw that you replied to this thread and clicked on the link in the email I got a message that I had to have Google Drive permission to view, so you may want to keep that in mind, I assume they contacted you for permission?

, I can see the spreadsheet fine when I open the email and view as i would on the MB.

Thanks

I can see and use the spreadsheet, but that may be because I have been granted access in Google docs.

I think I was mistaken. They can select a single cell and they can zoom the image but they do not seem to have access to change. I was confused by the select action.

It is visible to guests but there may be associated permissions. I will check that. If there are usergroup permissions they will apply to the feature not individual insertions. More later...

That's what I get too. No ability to change it. Unless you meant that it updates as YOU change things.

You may highlight cells, rows and columns but that is the extent of it. That feature is probably useful for screenshots referencing the spreadsheet.

I wish it worked with uploaded attachments and I will probably continue to explore that.
