IMPORTANT DATE CHANGE:
NOW May 2, 1PM PDT, 2PM MDT, 3PM CDT, 4PM EDT:
Pat Holloway on "Commemorative watches: Not your normal history lesson"

At the time they were sold, commemorative watches provided a useful way to capture memories of a fun day at the fair or a historic event. Today, these same watches can provide an interesting collection, as well as a series of brief history lessons. Join us to take a watch-by-watch historical trip from 1876 through the 20th century. It may be surprising to learn the many, varied events that have been commemorated with a watch.

The Seattle Chapters are holding regular ZOOM meetings every other Sunday at 1PM PST. All are welcome to join.
Our next ZOOM meeting will be Sunday March 7 at 1PM PST. Gary Myers will present a program on the Morbier Clock “The Model T of European Clocks”

To most Americans and the aristocrats of France, French clocks are all about the marble and crystal regulators, with Tiffany and Wanamaker inscribed dials. Outside of Paris and other major cities though, was a lesser known clock called the Morbier, a clock "of the people", "by the people" and "for the people".

Starting in 1685, when the Mayet brothers constructed a tower clock in the Capucine Convent in St. Claude, precision time started taking hold amongst the commoners. In 1700 the first Morbier clocks were hand crafted timepieces based on the Mayet design. In the late eighteenth century the clock was "sub-contracted" to local farmers and an assembly line like process was born that became the modern Morbier of the Comte` region.

Gary Myers and several Chapter 50 members are carrying forward a legacy that Lawrence A. Seymour left to us and the NAWCC about these clocks. Much of the information comes from his research and the clocks he left to the membership.

Chapter #106, Saturday, March 13: NOON PST, 1 PM MST, 2 PM CST, 3 PM EST
Andy Devan on the American Waltham Watch Company and its Factory

We are both fortunate and pleased to have Mr. Andy Devan as our guest presenter for the March meeting. Andy is an NAWCC Star Fellow and was awarded the James W. Gibb Literary Award for horological literary excellence in 2016. Additionally, Andy is a member of the NAWCC Chapter Relations Committee, the Crafts Committee, and the Publications Advisory Committee. He has found reading and researching the histories of various makers and companies as challenging and exciting as collecting. Late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century weight-driven clocks are Andy’s primary focus. Andy is also a prolifically published writer for the NAWCC Bulletin and other horological publications. His program is entitled the "American Watch Company and its Factory".

Hope to see all of you on Saturday!

Thursday, 4-8 at 11am PDT, NOON MDT, 1pm CDT, 2pm EDT:
Chapter 160 Zoom Meeting: Radium in Horology
Also: Link to Last Month's Recording
Greetings Everyone;
I have scheduled the next Boulder Horological Society Zoom meeting for Thursday, April 8th, 2021 at 12 noon Mountain Time. The link is at the end. For this month we will take a look at Radium and its use on watch and clock dials/hands, its risks, dealing with it, etc. If you own vintage items from the 20's up to the 60's there is a chance they have Radium based lume, especially if it's military. Colorado played an important part in the Radium industry from the 1890's through the 1920's. This topic is inspired by a recent presentation on military watches given by Alex Greenberg of the Cherry Creek Watch Company to the Denver RedBar group. The recent book and movie "Radium Girls" by Kate Moore is also relevant. So bring out your items from this time frame to show off and join us!

Screen sharing by all participants will be enabled and I have actually scheduled the meeting to start at 11:30am so we can use the first 30 minutes to practice and resolve issues. Feel free to login at any time. Also, if you have headphones with a microphone I would suggest using it as your voice quality will be much better and the background noise will be greatly reduced.

Here is the link to the edited video of last month's meeting. We spent the first 16 minutes talking about the tentatively scheduled Rocky Mountain Regional at the Boulder County Fairgrounds Saturday July 31/Sunday August 1 2021.

Boulder Horological Society: Chronographs & Stopwatches

The suggestion for this month is chronographs and stopwatches. There isn't any prepared presentation so everyone is invited to do a show & tell of items in their collection or projects that they have been working on. Chronographs are generally considered time displaying devices with an added stopwatch function. Stopwatches strictly are time measuring devices that can be very simple low jewel count designs or sophisticated and expensive olympic type gems. These can be wristwatches, pocket, tabletop, or panel mounted for use on aircraft.

Here is the link to the edited video of last month's meeting on Radium:

Here is the next meeting invite. Please note that the meeting link and passcode is unique for each of the meetings, old ones won't work. If you have questions, suggestions or comments email me at:

Rocky Mountain Regional Next Month!
Last Meeting's Video Uploaded

The next Boulder Horological Society Zoom meeting has been scheduled for the last Thursday of the month, June 24th, 2021 at 12 noon Mountain Time. The link is at the end. My apologies again for the delay in the meeting and getting this notice out. Lots of summer related conflicts going on.

But first on the agenda is this year's Rocky Mountain Regional - It is just 7 weeks away at the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont on Saturday July 31st and Sunday August 1st. This is our first in person get together post pandemic.

The Regional website is here: and the registration form is here:
.

You have to be an NAWCC member to be able to get a table to sell but non-NAWCC members will be allowed to attend.

Also, if you have large clocks, tools, workbenches and other items that you are not sure you want to bring, the Denver Chapter 21 has a web page that you can submit picture ads to along with your contact information. You have to be a member of Chapter 21 ($10/year) and 5 ads will cost you $15, 10 ads $30. This way people can preview what you have and contact you directly. This is not intended to replace the regional nor will Chapter 21 act as a money taker, it is just an online list. Here is a link to that resource: .

I urge all local members to make an effort to participate in this year's Regional and make this a success. The days have been shifted to the weekend to accommodate folks who have weekday jobs.

This month I will give a presentation on tuning fork watches. With today's collectors it's a bit of a fringe area. Electronics with mechanics, no balance wheel but yet still relying on physical resonance to drive a fairly conventional time train. When the Accutron came out in the late 50's and early 60's it was a major step forward in timekeeping performance by 2 orders of magnitude. Typical consumer watches went from a minute a day of accuracy to 1 second for a properly adjusted Accutron.

Consumer demand was high and within 10 years it made Bulova the largest watch company in the world and spawned a number of licensed clones in Europe/Asia and unlicensed designs in Russia and China. But it turned out to be short lived as the rise of quartz and miniaturized digital technology driven by the space program took over the watch world and Bulova's dominance collapsed. I will give a brief history of the development but focus more on collecting, types, owning and servicing of tuning fork watches.

Chris Radek is planning on joining the meeting. Chris is a specialist in tuning fork watches based in Lincoln, Nebraska as well as conventional timekeepers and has an excellent website, timeguy.com. We met a few years ago at our local NAWCC Rocky Mountain Regional and he has become my go-to expert on tuning fork watches. Chris is also active on the NAWCC and Watch U Seek forums.

Here is the link to the edited video of last month's show & tell session on Chronograph and Stopwatches:

During the last meeting the question came up as to when we are going to start meeting in person. I called the Buff Restaurant and they won't take groups like ours for an extended period, if ever again. They are just trying to manage the walk in crowd with the staff they have available. I am open to suggestions and locations if you have any. It doesn't have to be a restaurant, we could bring our own food to a meeting space. We could also do some afternoon gatherings at local breweries though I know some members don't drink and that kind of venue might not be interesting to them. We have some downtown food halls with open seating but they are not cheap and you will have to pay for parking. So reply to this email if you have thoughts on this.

Here is the next meeting invite. Please note that the meeting link and passcode is unique for each of the meetings, old ones won't work. If you have questions, suggestions or comments email me at:

Tomorrow, Tomorrow! JULY 22 @ 11am PDT, Noon MDT, 1 CDT, 2 EDT

A midsummer greetings to you all!

The next Boulder Horological Society Zoom Lunch will be 7/22/2021 at 12 Noon Mountain Time (GMT-7). The theme will be the quest for water resistance and the development of dive watches. We will be joined again by Anthony Kable of Plus9Time.com who will talk about Seiko and other Japanese manufacturers' efforts in this area. We will start the meeting with an update on our local Regional and Tim Orr will give us his perspective and a slide show of the National.
The agenda for the presentation is I will give an overview of the early European efforts and then hand it over to Anthony for a Japanese Brand perspective. Early Seiko dive watches have a crazy and dedicated fan base. After that we will go into show and tell so look for items in your collection that you might want to share.
Secondary cameras are really helpful for showing watches using the share screen function and I can help you with the process. Your smartphone can do an excellent job of this both wireless and tethered with a USB cable. From my experience the tethered option is much faster due to my slow network.

Last month's Zoom recording has been edited and uploaded to YouTube. The theme was Accutrons & More featuring Chris Radek (Timeguy.com)

Per Tim Schulz: Bill Sohne is a bit of an internet icon, having been very active in the vintage watch world from the first days of the internet. He is currently a level 2 moderator on the Omegaforums.net website and prior to that PuristPro and TimeZone. He is mostly known as an oracle of knowledge on all things vintage Omega and other brands. I was a bit surprised that he is a serious Chelsea clock nut and since we have lacked clock coverage with these meetings, I asked him if he could join us. I am thrilled that he agreed. This will be a bit freeform.

REMINDER: Chapter 8 Webinar
August 18, 2021 - Steve McGowan
"Reverse Engineering Complex Watch Movements"
mail.jpg

To Register, Click HERE:
Steve McGowan is an electrical engineer who designs computer IO systems for a living. For the last 5 years he has been working for a company that makes chips for noise cancelling headphones, and prior to that he worked in the Intel Research Labs for 20 years, primarily on their USB development team.

In his spare time, he has pursued a variety of interests, including watch design and 3D modeling. Initially he would create 3D models of interesting escapements that he discovered on the web to better understand how they worked. The modeling program he uses helps him to visualize how mechanisms work by allowing him to animate them, and see how their various parts interact. After discovering 3D printers Steve realized that I could use them to turn his 3D models into physical parts without a huge investment in tools or time. The additive manufacturing approach offered by today's hobbyist quality 3D printers allows him to turn a model of a very complex part into a physical part in a matter of hours, with a very small investment in tools and materials. 3D printers also allow Steve to spend more time designing, and less time fabricating his ideas. Of course, brass is beautiful and elegant, but even if he were to master the necessary machining skills, the materials costs would be prohibitive.

Per Tim Schulz: Hello Everyone, we are having to postpone tomorrow's (August 19) meeting with Bill Sohne on Chelsea clocks due to unforeseen circumstances. We are hoping to put it on in later September so stay tuned! Next week's Zoom session is still on with Tim Orr and GPS for Beginners
