How old might this clock be.

Had the pleasre of repairing this clock today, question is it was brought many years ago,for quite a tidy sum,but on taking the movement out, found holes for a different movement, the friend had no knowlege of this, does the presant movement in any way represents the age of the case, I thought it might be a Lenzkirch, but after looking at images on goggle, couldnt find anything like it, I don't know much about the maker other than the details on the photograph, I wonder if it was a well thought out marridge.some of the finials are being turned by a friend of mine to complete the case, basiclly the clock was just out of beat, due to the fact that the screws supporting the hanging plate were almost ready to pull through the back of the case, the plate was hanging at an angle, that done I fitted tempory to screws at the bottom into the wall each side to stop it swingin when the door was opened, covering the heads in masking tape to stop any marking of the case, will get two side supports from M&P. The movement its self was quite clean, following a service three years ago, I did oil the movement, it came off very easily as it hangs on a plate with hooks in the four corners, I would love to find out who the case maker is.

Re: How old might this clock be.

The movement was made in late 90', or even at the beginning of XX century, after the takeover of GR by Junghans.
The case is probably earlier, made in Germany.

Re: How old might this clock be.

Hi Tarant, I found that you have spoken at length about this maker, Gebr Resch under Resch clocks, including other members, in trying to build up a history from manufacturer, during 2013 2014, could this clock be included in the Resch clock section, may be it can be moved over, I think it is earlier than 1890s, bare in mind the case had a previous movement, I think that movement was a single weight previously, the serial number on the clock movement is 20000 with a simbol of a clock hand then the following number 45921. On the paper in the photographs it has the history of the family that was making the movements for Resch I presume.glad I found the ansewer to my question. The lady who owns the clock gave me a date of 1874. Could be wrong, but will will never know what the previous movement was.

Re: How old might this clock be.

Can't help with who made the case but date wise it looks like the ever popular last quarter 19th C answer and it certainly appears the case at one time housed ano movement. Anyway it has a good quality movement in it now.

I have read somewhere that Resch once they got past the serial # 100,000 they only put the final 4 digits of the number on the pendulum rod holder and bracket and other places with the movement numbered 100,000 etc with the full remaining serial number. e.g. the serial # of this clock is 245,921. Lenzkirch did something similar once they got past a million.

Re: Post Your Gebrüder Resch clocks here.

Here's my first GR clock. Numbers on plates, pendulum and mount all match. Needed cleaning and very careful setup. Would stop running after a few hours until I polished the pallets and the strike is still slightly out of sync with the minute hand (~ 1 min late), but otherwise fine.

Re: Post Your Gebrüder Resch clocks here.

Thank you very much - we don't know how to qualify this clock correctly.
Structurally they were very much alike.
It's not quite miniature, nor standard (probably).
Can you give us the length of the pendulum and dial dimension?

Re: Post Your Gebrüder Resch clocks here.

Marius

Dial is 15.5 cm and pendulum is approx. 46 cm. Hope this helps. Does the case (especially the crown) look original? The back has no extra mounting holes, so it doesn't appear to be a marriage, but from Ebay you never know.

Re: Post Your Gebrüder Resch clocks here.

Thanks.
I think it's a miniature with enlarged dial (normal size is 130 mm) or a dwarf. Dimension of the plate is crucial. If it's 102 x 95 (-> 97) mm, it's a dwarf

Sad news. The main building of the GR factory was destroed, probably in this 2016 year!!! Barbarians are everywhere!!!

Look. Arthur Junghans Uhrenfabrik in 1907. Solvay Sodafabrik on the rear plane (salt heaps):

This is one of the highest numbered movements from Ebensee (in our database the last is 277501). Production of the movements with Remember logo was probably ended after July 1901. Probably, because we know, that Junghans continued using trademarks od Lenzkirch and Gustav Becker after buying these companies. We don't know if that happened with Resch.

Re: Post Your Gebrüder Resch clocks here.new today!

The movement was produced in the end of "Resch" Ebensee 1908-1910 (?)... I think
The case seems to be from earlier.
Maybe it lay in store ... about 20 years.
Crown secondary, well below the production quality Resch.

Regards Mariusz.

Re: Post Your Gebrüder Resch clocks here.new today!

Greetings, ladies and gentlemen!

Thanks to Mr. Piotr ( 'tarant'), I have discovered that an old clock on the wall that nobody cared about, was not Gustav Becker from 1872., but in fact "Gebruder Resch" from 1888.
And it's working like a charm !

Now I am really interested to learn more about it !

You have one of the less than twenty cataloged Resch spring clocks in the world.
I think it was produced a bit earlier - 1883/1884 (?)

Re: Post Your Gebrüder Resch clocks here.new today!

Thank you very much for your reply. Production year is unclear, so it was estimated by serial number (which doesn't seem to be good indicator of production year, either...as records vary from one source to another).

I was told that Remember Co spring mechanisms were very rare, but their current value doesn't really reflect this uniqueness, as they were not considered very valuable.

I actually got an offer for it at 140eur, with buyer explaining that he would need to invest 30 eur in new spring gong and 50 eur in full service and then clock would be able to achieve its top value of 220-250 eur.
I was quite surprised with this, as I seem to recall having seen one similar wall clock achieving 3-4 times as much on the auction.

I have also learned that it's mostly two-weights and three-weights that are highly sought-after, going for 800-1500 eur for clocks in excellent condition.

So, in your opinion, what would you do in my position? Any suggestion is welcome :)

Don't sell this clock :) They are of the same quality as weight driven. This is the first GR ad, from November 1888, where spring driven clocks are in offer.

Re: Post Your Gebrüder Resch clocks here.new today!

:) Even worse - they were trying to bid me down, due to issues it has (broken spring gong, needing a service).
Last guy said that because there are few holes in the wooden case ( probably from a wormwood), he wouldn't pay more than 130eur...

Unfortunately, market for these watches here in Serbia is very small and even top-notchm significantly more popular Gustav Beker with weights go for 240-250 EUR nowadays (2-3 years ago they sold occassionaly for 350-450eur)
I know an ethusiast who has at least 20 of them at this moment for sale and few other in his personal collection.

So, thank you very much for your input! :) I really appreciate all the info.
Now I really do know enough to appreciate this old wall clock. In any case, my wife said it' had very soothing, almost therapeutic sound:)

Regarding its value, I do agree with you, mr Heli. As my late professor of "stockmarket 101" course always said, real price of some item is the one seller would be willing to pay if he was a buyer, and buyer would be willing to sell for, if he was selling it.

So, for the moment, I'll try to get it serviced, gong replaced and then enjoy it few more years, unless some really great "offer I can't refuse" comes along.

In any case, I also have one rather rare and historically significant 1969. Omega wrist watch, to satisfy my need to learn more about this nice mechanisms :)

Will, you have a Gebrüder Resch, and quite a nice one at that. Someone else should be able to provide a close estimate when it was made based on the serial number 205017, I don't have that info.

Re: Vienna ID help

Thanks, gentlemen.
The numbers behind the gong are:

2000000
5017

Does that mean anything?
Will, I looked at your photos under high magnification and the top number only has six digits, i.e. 200000, not 2 million. As I originally posted and Jim has confirmed that means the serial number is 205017, obtained by adding the 200000 to 5017.. Gebrüder Resch first used this "convention" starting at clock number 100001, stamping 100000 above the rest of the serial number. I don't know how high they went with this, someone who follows Resch clocks should be able to discuss the serial numbering of their clocks.

Re: Vienna ID help

I've never seen catalog published by GR. Some GR clocks you may see in Florence Kroeber catalogs. I have access to the database of GR clocks with estimated production date, which is not intended for publication so far. First and last years ofclocks production by Resh family are still not completely explained. We don't know when the last clock with Remember logo left Ebensee factory after taking over by Junghans (July 1901).
