I can't understand why I didn't think of posting these pictures before. Ansomnia kindly scanned them from a book, by Ernest L. Edwardes, a copy of which I once had (alas).

The pictures show the earliest known mechanical alarum clocks, and two early paintings showing such clocks.

The tower warden's clock, would remind the warden to ring the bells, and the monastic clock reminded the monk on the bell, to ring out for: lauds, matins, compline etc.
