On these small clocks mainly celluloid clocks do wind their springs get week and only allow 12 hours run time on a winding. This may even be true with all clocks after 50 years but I don't know. The wind spring not broken but weak is the question. Thanks Ron

Ron, yes, that can happen with cheap alarm clock or novelty clock movements.
They didn't use best quality springs to start with and through time they set, loosing
    much of their strength.
Most spring driven clocks encounter these problems to a certain extent - sooner or later.
High quality movements with topof the line components may be an exception.

My clock is a nice running clock. I don't know who made it but its nice. How long should they run when new springs? How long when old springs? Thanks for the info. Ron

    Hi everybody,
I am a newbie on this forum. I've just bought a nice alarm clock, labeled G. Becker. It is very similar to Westclox alarm clocks, especially two sliders on a top.
Please tell me something about it, when produced, maybe a catalog pages scan etc.

    Greetings,
    Joachim

I have this nice little HAC musical alarm that plays "God Save the Queen." It is currently torn apart on my bench after a cleaning and mainspring replacement. I'm having a deuce of a time trying to get it back together, problem fitting the main springs in with retainers on them. Might have to go with wire to retain them . . .

Yes, alarm clocks often present problems like this. I always use wire, but have run into alarm problems where wire wouldn't work, and had to make a special retainer to fit the need.
    Nice little alarm, Douglas.

This alarm clock was produced by Junghans, not in Freiburg Factory. The production date is coded like on other Junghans clocks - April 1934.

Joachim, welcome to the NAWCC Message Board and thanks for posting your inquiry and the photos of your GB alarm clock. As Tarant has mentioned, this clock was made after Gebrüder Junghans had taken over Gustav Becker and following the closure of the original GB factory in Freiburg, Silesia. Your clock was likely made in Schramburg since the movement is basically a Junghans design.

Your clock movement was finished in April 1935 as per the date stamp "35 4" to the right of the GB anchor logo. Junghans continued to made these clocks at least to 1940, which is the last year we have found documentary evidence that the GB anchor logo was being used.

I found a 1932 GB catalog illustration of a predecessor to your clock, although this one is most likely made in Freiburg before they closed the factory. It has the same basic case design, same model name "Repetition" and alarm switch features as your clock; the movement may have been somewhat different.

    156818.jpg

For the interest of other GB collectors I'm copying the related posts here to the "Post Your Gustav Becker Clocks Here" thread, perhaps someone there can add more info regarding this clock.

Belongs to a friend who asked me to service it. Minute hand fell off. Cute little feller with a two inch porcelain dial that announces, "New Haven" . I'm guessing it's a one day runner. Enjoy!

I'll add a few more and hope this keeps going... All acquired for $1, $2 or $3, so they are budget approved :)by the CFO (wife:cop:) . That is a nice aspect of these clocks - usually priced right if you can find them.

Here's a quick look at part of my alarms. Mostly Westclox and I'm servicing all of them, one at a time. I'm new to this, so it's a great learning experience. Made the cubbies to fit the clox. I'll post individuals as they are serviced. Thanks for looking and having interest in alarms... P1010343_zpsf484mgck.jpg P1010339_zpsxy9bpksa.jpg

Johntimer, thanks! I try to buy fixers, then work on them top to bottom. I try not to repaint, but if it needs it, I'm not opposed to doing it. I'm also not opposed to bushing or replacing missing parts. I just love the Westclox.

Here is a little Gilbert alarm clock I brought because I liked its Art Deco style. It will be right at home with my small collection of American 1950s plastic radios. Interesting is that while cleaning the winders, I found one is stamped 11 over 37. It's not a long bow to draw to suggest this might be the manufacturing date.

I like the alarm repeater carriage clock with the engine turned mask. I have a silver cased miniature carriage clock (timepiece though)

Somebody fitted a new platform at some point. It is gilded inside the case.

How could you post a forum like this and not include these Seth Thomas beauties? One is in the catalin (bakelite) case, the other in a light mahogany case. They both keep very accurate time and the alarm works on both.

Ok, heres one im intrigued by and would like help on dating and identifying. I believe it has a Savage / massey lever escapement. I dont fully understand the various types on these it has the pallets attached directly to the lever. It is set in a Mahogany case. I find it intriguing the 'Fast' on slow and fast has the old type 'S' which pretty much was out of use by early 19th century although there are exceptions. To set the alarm you turn the knob on the rear and the centre brass disc turns on the front and the printed hand point to which ever hour you want to set it to. There are serial numbers and there maybe more info under the back plate but if anyone could throw some suggestion my way it would be appreciated.
