• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

Poor old Schatz Anniversary Clock

Looking at my daily list to see if anything peaked my interest and came across this Schatz 400 day anniversary clock. Now what puzzled me initially was the second hand on the dial. I thought that was weird, so decided to take a look further to see if it would be worth getting. So upon looking at it a bit more, everything looked in-tact except for the broken suspension spring but the bottom block was there and the rest of it looked good that is until I got to the side view.....

I was a bit taken back to see what is a quartz movement stuck on the front of the regular movement in the back! Well, for me, it is one that I will pass on this time as I bet the main minute wheel and shaft is probably cut off along with the hour cannon. Probably could find the parts but not exactly sure you could mount the original dial back on the front plate. Hate to see a butcher job like this on a nice old clock.

Great find that should go in the clockmaker's hall of shame but indeed it could have also been a cleverly disguised trick. ;) .. If she/he had used original hands and left the seconds hand off.
Mind, the original customer(if there was one) would have had to agree with the changes.
Yeah it should be in a hall of shame and if it was a clock repair person who did it, they should be embarrassed to do something like that. If you wanted a quartz anniversary clock, then go get one, not put something like this together.

It's certainly creative. I found this one in an antiques shop. The case was in good shape at least.

Unfortunately, there are clocks that are destined to be parts sources. This is one of them. The real tragedy is that the Schatz 49 is an absolutely bulletproof movement and is the easiest one to restore and get running that I've ever encountered.

I was hoping to get a good deal on one as I don't have one. Would really like to know how they attached the quartz movement to the original one. If they glued it on, a)how did they plan on changing the battery and b) how dis the time set wheel not get stuck and it not work anyways? Guess will never know lol.

Keep at it - the right clock will find you. They're plentiful and not expensive, so don't give up hope. If you can't find a good Schatz, take a look at the large-plate Kundos. They're also nicely designed and well-built. I place them a close second to the Schatz 49.

As I said, sometimes all they want it to do is tell the time. However, I do deplore doing anything that reduces the original status.
Particularly when there is very little that can go wrong with such clocks. All it needs is someone with skills knowledge and patience.

As for getting a quartz anniversary clock.. Not the best advice.
I dunno. I've got a couple of nice Schatz and Hermle quartz anniversary clocks. One of the Schatz clocks looks like a miniature Atmos.

As long as their batteries don't leak, that's been my experience. The Schatz clocks use a "C" cell. I had to replace the cell in one of them at about 18 months. The other one is still clocking along. I don't know how long its battery will last; I've only had it about a year and I put a new one in when I got it.

Well I did find a 'diamond' face one that I am watching at the moment. Have seen some Kundos ones like it and I like the dial on it. So if I can get it at a good price, I just may end up with one. LOL

Putting a quartz movement in a torsion clock is a new one on me. Why would anyone settle for not having a moving pendulum?
