I was wondering what type of abrasives are used to polish pivots without doing damage. I appreciate your efforts in educating this old dog trying to learn new tricks !

I use a pivot file with a file on one end and a burnisher on the other.

When one uses abrasives to polish pivots, some of the abrasive particles are imbedded into the metal of the pivot.
Hence, that pivot and hole will likely wear faster than with the virgin metal being a bit rough.
I agree with Shutterbug's method.
