A very high quality Audemars Piguet minute repeater keeps very good time dial up and dial down, but gains 30 minutes per day in vertical stem up position. The amplitude is very good and the balance runs true in the round and the flat. Would appreciate any thoughts on possible causes to start checking and options for repair.

How does pendant up compare to the other vertical positions?

    Hi Doug,

Are the amplitude and the gaining rate the same in all four vertical positions, and are both horizontal positions also the same?

    Regards,

    Graham

If it runs good in dial positions, and things go out the window in pendant positions, the first thing I would look at is poise. Next in line for me would be the curb pins.

I'd pull the balance wheel out and check it for poise first.

Timing machine readings would tell you a lot. 30 minutes a day is huge, so I'd suspect that something is rubbing. Any pics of timing traces you could attach?

To hazard a wild guess, in that position gravity is probably pulling the balance staff closer to the pallet, so the jewel it is engaging improperly in the fork, or the safety pin is rubbing against the roller. The amplitude thus drops, causing a really fast rate.

Check if you hear anything rubbing/knocking.
