• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

16s 3FB Getty model, "Burlington Special" (Illinois Watch Co.) grade 185, model 5, L/S, 19j, adj., ser. # 2106100 (1908).

I purchased this attractive 16s Getty model (movement, with dial and hands only) last August. I quite like the looks of these 3FB Getty models. The nice thinning and rounding of the wheel spokes, and their exposure through the train bridge "fingers", gives you a good look at the motion of the train right to the escapement.
Burlington Special appears in the center of the double sunk dial which has decorative black Roman numerals with red numerals at 5 minute intervals. "Burlington Watch Co. Chicago, U.S.A." is stamped in black on the rear of the main plate beneath the balance wheel. A hair line can be seen at on the dial at 26 min. The movement came in good condition, runs extremely well and keeps very good time.

The Dueber Silverine SB&B case, was pulled from on hand spares.

Picked up this Waltham last week. 18 size, with Santa Fe Route stamped on the movement. Nice Bates & Bacon 20 year gold filled "Royal" case. Anyone know if the dial is appropriate - many other Santa Fe's had that marked on the dial as well. I mostly collect keyword watches, this is a collection detour for me. Thanks!

I would say no, a 24 hour dial seen mostly in Canada and Mexico, I don't believe that the Santa Fe went through either country. Most likely the original dial was damaged.

I once made the comment here that 992s are like elbows. Every collector has a couple. So I bought a circa 1918 Hamilton 992 fixer-upper. The mainspring is broken. It is missing the whip spring. The balance doesn't swing freely. The hands are rusty because of the yellow plastic crystal. The case threads are in tough shape and it takes several minutes to get the bezel and back screwed on. I'll add it to my pile of things to do.

As a somewhat new collector it still amazes me how many of these watches survive up to this day. I still wonder how many are languishing in junk drawers and whatnot that are simply forgotten about and never see the light of day. A fascinating piece of Americana!

A recent arrival is an Elgin Veritas, 8401399, Grade 214 from the first run, 18s, 23j, recased, near perfect Montgomery dial with Canadian 13-24 hour markings, SW/LS, capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor, gold disk around balance jewel setting (is this appropriate for this watch?), ornate DMK, sluggish on full wind after a reluctant start. This one will get a thorough overhaul. ev1a.jpg ev2a.jpg ev3a.jpg ev4a.jpg ev5a.jpg

Beautiful watch!! I have I have 8401426 just 27 units down line from yours which I bought 12 years ago and it has the same gilt treatment done to the center of the regulator as yours! The 18s 3/4 plate Elgins are some of the best line of watches they made.

Someone should start a thread about 18s Standard Watches AKA RR Watches

Hamilton 973 16s L/S, # 763347, 1910.

I bought the 973 LS back in August filling in a gap between my 972 and 974s, coming in a Bates & Bacon Royal gold filled, 20 yr, SB&B OF case.
I see no signs of additional screw marks on the case ring, and assume it's original. The Hamilton font on the dial appears only on one other Hamilton I have; a 960.

Hamilton made a total of about 10240 973s. The 6640 made between 1895 to 1907 were pendent sent and adjusted only.
They also made 3620 lever set 973s from 1905 to 1914. These watches were adjusted to 6 positions.

Watch runs quite good but sometimes a bit sluggish FD so it will need servicing and a new MS.

That is what the first letter appears to be Clint… I am away from home for a couple of weeks, an additional close up can be attached then if J A C does not have a maker associated with those letters ..

That's a sweet watch, John. The gilding is really well preserved and the case is crisp.

Recently picked up this well used Waltham 1883. I was looking for something to wear daily. It was used a lot, appears that the case dates to the watch so probably original. It has 15 or 16 service marks on the back of the case and Roman numerals to VII on the front bezel (I assume that’s how many crystal replacements?). It’s keeping time around 4-5 seconds/day…so I’m really happy

My most recent arrival is easy to describe but the backstory is driving me bonkers. The watch is Peoria 14493, 18s, 15j, HC, movement marked Eyenatten's Standard, Anti-magnetic, adjusted, safety pinion, Peoria, IL, circa 1885-1895, PL for Fred Eyenatten. Now to the backstory. I read somewhere that that Fred Eyenatten was a jeweler and the chief watch inspector for the railroad at that location. I made careful written notes of the information and references but I cannot find them! I'm beginning to doubt myself. Did I just imagine making those notes? I don't know. I was hoping a wiser more experienced member could help me solve this problem. ppl1.jpg ppl2.jpg ppl3.jpg ppl4.jpg ppl5.jpg ppl6.jpg ppl7.jpg

I'm definitely not a wiser member of the forum, but I think it's Eynatten, rather than Eyenatten. I didn't find any other threads for either spelling, and just a few items in the Jeweler's Circular about his travels, and one site showed a silver mark, but that was it. Hopefully someone else will be able to shed light on his other activities. Regardless, it's a beautiful watch - congratulations!

The only thing I would recommend is that you change your moniker. You look like "Old Pro" to me! Great watch, and that's true of a number you've shared lately.

This is a Keystone-Howard Series 12, 17J,10-size watch, SN 18165. It is in a Fahys Monarch case rather than a Keystone case, as I might have expected. The case, FWIW, seems not to have had another occupant and seems well suited to the movement.

Dial.JPG Movement.JPG Case Maker.JPG Case Bacl.JPG

The movement carries the Arrow and Circle trademark registered March 6, 1923, but, per the trademark application, apparently used since about January 1, 1911.
Trademark Watch Case & Movement Arrow & Circle by Keystone Watch Case Co Issued Mar 6, 1923 (pocketwatchdatabase.com)

There is also mention on the movement of "Pat'd 21," referring to the following patents granted to Joseph A. Freund on September 27, 1921.
Patent Watch Thin Movement by Joseph A. Freund Issued Sep 27, 1921 (pocketwatchdatabase.com)

Arthur N. Borg wrote a very interesting (and intense) article on The Howard Ten Size Watch for the August 1967 Bulletin, pp. 941 - 964.

I am, I find, remiss in not mentioning in my earlier post the following very informative and useful articles from our own Wiki. I attribute it to haste and my boyish enthusiasm over my watch.

Two back from the overhaul.
1.) A Peoria 14493, 15j 18s, PL. Previously shown and described.
Old Rookie, I hope you don´t mind if I ask you a question, do you also think 15000 could be Fredonia and not Peoria? I know they really are the same company on paper, but it places your watch around 1885. Plus where was it "Previously shown and described"?

Regards,

Allan.

PS; I forgot to say, there is only one case screw, which is early for these watches?

The watch below arrived from Australia today. Really nice condition, and holding the time after twelve hours. It´s one of those watches made for the
Jewellers League (State Organisation), Nice swing-out case, in Fahy´s "Pilgrim" case. It´s a first for me, I do have a Keystone Howard with a spring-out case, but this one is a little more complicated. I don´t like screw-on dials at the best of times.

Allan.

How To Open A Pocket Watch Case by Kent
