Placing springs on wrong side

Yea, I always take pictures of my clocks as I take them apart. Maybe I'm too cautious, but the pictures sure comes in handy sometimes. After I finish taking them I usually transfer them over to my computer under a directory named "c:\pictures\<clock mfg-type>". Easy to find that way.

I used to take it a step further and take pictures AND roughly sketch out the movement layout in a notepad. Talk about OCD...

Even after seven years of doing this commercially, I still make small drawings on my worksheet of spring directions and note whether pinions are up or down. It isn't that I can't figure it out, but reassembly is much quicker with instructions. Also, ALWAYS confirm rack/snail strike counts, at least 11, 12, and 1 BEFORE casing the movement. I can't tell you how many times I've had to pull the movement because it struck something other than 12 at 12:00. You can't just let it drop it in the middle of the 11 position and assume you've got it right. Prove it first!

As well as taking pictures, when separating the parts, use two containers marked time and strike. This will help keep the parts together. Work on each side separately.

Yes Harold, that's something that works and can save you a whole lot of trouble. Great advise!

Having it clear the snail at 12 (just barely) usually will ensure proper placement.

I remember when I was young I use to take something apart I wouldn't mark it or if it was wire I just unplug them, not knowing how they went back together. So I think that taking pictures or writing something down is a smart thing to do. So who are we to impress, but ourself. I think someone said that once.
