Pin Pallet Repair

This pin pallet is from a Schatz midget. One pin is broken off. Having never done this procedure before, I believe my first step is to dissolve the pin fragment with an alum solution. (I will check the archives for the solution strength.) My question is do I have to remove the pallet from the arbor, or can I figure out some way to suspend only the broken side of the pallet in the solution and still be successful?

I done a few of these, just mixed it as strong as possible even used vinegar to kick it up a notch. Used a sloldering helper holder that ends in alligator clips to hold the anchor and small vice grips to hold the all plastic wire nut I used for a alum tank. Have to refill the wire nut a few times to keep the level contacting the pin socket.

I would suggest trying to remove it with a punch (improvised with some fine music wire). Much simpler solution if it will work. That is how I've always done it.

The pins sockets on the Jum7 are just under 10 thousandths so thats gonna be one tiny punch!

Thank you, Wayne A, for the advice on how to dissolve the pin fragment. I was so hoping I could do it without having to remove the pallet. I did try punching it with a fine sewing needle that was near in size of the pallet, but that fragment wasn't going anywhere.

Anytime, also the jum/7 pallets are pressed in. I sand down the tip a half thousandth of the 10thou beading needle, then heat the brass with clean soldering iron, then freeze spray the pin just before quickly pushing it in. When I've pressed them in like this they go in with a audible squeak.

As others have noted before me, the alum worked perfectly. The stub was mostly gone after 24 hours, but it took another day for me to see light through the hole. My finest beading needle is too thick at .35 mm, so I am on the hunt for the proper size .25 mm. If I am unsuccessful, I see some sanding ahead of me.

I’ve gotten John James needles before for actually sewing. They are very well made. Now I know what number to order. Thanks again. Your help is so appreciated. I hated to see this one become spare parts when it had all its parts, except for that one little pin pallet.

Nicely done and I think the springy steel of those needles will be less prone to breaking. Still I always put a finger tip on the escape wheel when I adjust the time.
