First Peoria ever seen by me bought locally. Price guide indicates rarest. I think all original with fine deeply engraved gold fill 18 size case. Lever set 15j movement very well marked and finished. From 1885? artbissell

My antique laptop (or my overloaded old memory) lately insists starting images not my choice. However, I know of watch collectors also with guitars. The error photo is Gibson 1992 J 2000, but I value more a fine watch bravely offered as 15j Superior.

    Art,

Nice looking Peoria. The dial, though not perfect, is almost certainly correct for your "Superior Quality" mvt.

Besides the hunting version (like yours) there were also some made in open-face which are less common (neither is really common).

Here's the data I have on the Superior Quality Peoria mvts:

Hunting model s/ns with dial info:

    1 - DS/J. B. Greenhut, Peoria, Ill.
4160 - DS/P. E. Kern, El Paso, Tex., Arabic with red five minute numbers
4164 - SS/H. P. Nagel, Denver., Col., 24 hr type (I'm a bit dubious of this dial being original to the mvt)
4177 - DS/Peoria, Ill., Arabic with red five minute numbers
4224 - DS/Peoria, Ill., Roman with red five minute numbers
4266 - SS/Peoria, Ill. (doubtful about the dial)
    4276 - ?
    4284 - DS/?, Arabic
4286 - DS/Peoria, Ill, Arabic with red five minute numbers
    4295 - DS/Peoria, Ill., Arabic

Greg; glad you responded to this. Does your numbers list cover total quantity 360 & 41 or known quantity? Apparently not many bought for rr use. artb

    Art,

Reasonable production guesstimates would be 250 - 300 for the hunter (I think #4472 might be an outlier) and 50-100 for the open-face.

In any case, for such a high grade desirable piece not many are available.

I'm familiar with the movement shown in this post, but I came across the movement in the attached photo recently on eBay. I'd not seen it before, but thought it was interesting enough to share. Best, Dan (it's grainy because I took a picture of the computer screen...don't know any other way to do it).

A rare (for sure) high grade (for sure) Peoria. If you're going to own one or two Peorias then this is certainly one to try for.

FWIW, the seemingly more desirable Peoria For Railway Service mvts are way way more common.

An open-face Superior Quality Peoria recently passed through that famous auction site. Not perfect (especially the dial), but if one considers the relative scarcity of Peoria "grades" (as opposed to "variants" of grades and private labels) the OF Superior Quality ones are arguably the scarcest/rarest of all Peorias. No, I didn't buy it. Still neat to see one on the market.

your watch is a nice one and very very early. I have owned a zillion Peoria watches and used to do a TON of research on them. I have not done any reserch in years now and Greg and other may disagree and school me on this, but I think there are zero Peoria's in teh 1000 to 3000 range as Fredonia had those before moving to Peoria with one of the Howard brothers in tow. (Peoria promptly renamed Fuller street, Fredonia street which it reamins today.

Also serial number 1 if memory serves has a much higher number under the plates. (BTW, during my college years, I picked JB Greenhuts former home to live in while in college. It had about 20 apartments in it and we kids once, while joy riding in the elevator, climbed up on top of the elevator to reach teh attic and found a treasure trove of trunks, clothing, photographs (1910 era biplanes and such) (Duryea lived in Peoria and invented many airplane oriented things while there and Duryea Hall is still at Bradley U (the original one burned down).

Anyway, nice watch... I assume the teeth in the regulator wheel only go hal fway around? (this was changed whenFredonia moved to Peoria)

I've had several Superior HC models over the years - certainly a great find locally - looks to be a really nice movement - great DS Peoria dials are quite difficult to find.
    Great watch !

Being an early Howard enthusiast, I have no problem calling a 15 jewel watch "Superior." I love the damaskeening on your Peoria. The guitar is great too. Here is one of my five string, open back ("clawhammer style") banjos, the "Gryphons' Grandeur," a custom instrument made for me by the luthier, Kevin Enoch of Blairsville MD. His waiting list was eight years long, the last I knew.
