A friend gave me a small catalog from Penn Watch Co.

I found some references that it existed in early 1890 in Philadelphia.

Has anyone heard of this company?

I will finally able to carefully scan in a few pages of the catalog as it is almost 130 years and fragile.

Cover and sample page has anyone seen other catalogs or cases signed with the company's name?

    Andy,
Thanks for the scan. Can you find the logo from another page from inside the covers?

Looks like they were calling themselves a watch Company but actually, making watch cases that were fitted with European movements?

There is no company logo on any pages.

Company claimed that it made its own cases, but I doubt it as their capital investment was not sufficient for expensive machinery watch case manufacture. They might have done engraving or case enhancements. Philadelphia had many companies making watch cases that they could have custom made for them or added their name.

They cased mostly American movements at different prices, but they appeared to utilize some foreign movements. It appeared American movements were the vast majority.

Found the below image in an online Google copy of The Sunday School Times December 20, 1920. Different address in Philadelphia, but same company name and operation. Slightly different ad in some of the issues.
    Sunday School Times

The company is listed in this publication, but it was in a list of companies for which no information was provided. You may have to go through different pages where Penn Watch Co appears to find it, but this is a link to the publication.

    Hi Pat,

Thank you, I found an advertisement in 1890 Washington DC newspaper.

Your ad is helpful as it confirms company was still in business in 1920.

If you have any more company advertisements or suggest where I could look for more please let me know as I am working on a Bulletin article.

Progress will be slow as all the libraries are closed and need to so significant Ancestry work.

    Hi Ethan,

    The companies were not related.

Pennsylvania Watch Case Co. was based in York, PA, but its main office was in New York City

Penn Watch Co. was located in Philadelphia.

I don't want to derail your thread here, but I have an early private label Hampden marked for West Penn Watch Co, Pittsburgh.

The only information I can come up with is one other movement a few S.N. s away from mine.

If anyone happens to find anything on West Penn Watch Co while researching this Penn Watch Co, could you please send me a message? I am completely stumped. Many many hours of searching, and I can't wait to get to the library to continue my search after this whole mess is over with.

I know it's a shot in the dark, but maybe someone will run across it.

    Thank you for any consideration!

Rick, I gave it a solid 3 hour attempt - even found the end of the internet ;). Best I could come up with is there is an area just east of Pittsburgh that is referred to as West Penn, now as well as back in the 1870's. West Penn Power (electric company) and West Penn Railway with a couple more. You picked a really small needle in a very large haystack this time.
PS - I assume it is SN62124 I saw on the J&H site? Good luck, Joe

    Hi Joe,

Links are intreresting, but where are the actual advertisements I don't see them. You mentioned pages, but there are not advertisements visible.

    Hi, Andy -

When I clicked on the Internet Archive link, it took a few minutes for the search to complete. Once it finished, I could click on each of the 4 markers across the bottom. There was a small ad (the one in Post #10) on each of the 4 pages. They don't pop out because they are definitely small.

Hi Andy, sorry for the delay; been down with a sinus infection.
Pat has it right. It does take a long time. When the markers come on at the bottom, you click on it and it takes you to the page. Look for the highlighted section on the page and use the magnifying glass to zoom in. Then you can use a screen copy like Snip to make a copy and save. This is why I attached the files, in hopes to save you all that work.
    Hope that helps, Joe

    Hi Joe,

Sorry, I guess that I am stupid. I click on them they open, but the important still hidden and there is no magnifying glass.

There is much more that must done that I do not understand.

Just a little confusion - I think that the internet archive link quoted below is the one that will open and has the magnifying glass. The same ad (pictured in post #10, and quoted below) seems to have been run 4 times. Joe snipped the date and publication name for each of the 4 instances rather than snipping the same ad 4 times.

Internet Archive is an invaluable tool, but it can take a bit to load and search sometimes, especially with all the extra traffic on the net the last couple of weeks. Hope this helps.

Farm and Fireside in the above link has four ads:
    Dec 15, 1889 p95
    Dec 1, 1889 p74
    Nov 1, 1889 p44
