There seems to be some interest in patent regulators. I thought it would be good to have one topic that highlighted as many different ones as we could.

Not all patent regulators are found on American watches and relatively few were used on railroad watches. I will post a few of my favorites next.

Please post yours also and if possible get pictures of at least the top page of the patent to post.

This is a picture of Fogg's patent regulator as found on a Waltham KW16 American grade. On this grade the regulator adds a jewel to the mechanism bringing the watch from 19J to 20J.

You can click this image to make it larger.

The regulation is achieved by turning the screw head, which is attached to a cam that controls the arc of the vibrating regulator bar.

This is a picture of Oliver's patent regulator. It is a compound regulator similar to the one found on some of the United States Watch Company (Marion) watches. In this case it is on a movement made by Agassiz marked Cleveland Watch Co.

Here is a picture of DeLong's patent regulator. It is very similar to one patented 29 years earlier and used quite a bit by Vacheron & Constantin but has the improvement of an anti-backlash device.

Here is Fred McIntyre's patent regulator. In addition to being very subtle, it introduces some significant mechanical improvements because of very tight coupling between the regulator arm, pins and hairspring.

Peter,

Could you either post thumbnails or make your images smaller? Many of us still use 1024 x 768 screens and your wide pictures make the screen scroll sideways.

Thanks.

The vibrating hairspring stud (or pivoted stud) on Walthams exists in 16KW and 20 size (TWO TYPES).

16 (KW): 15J and 20J

20 size: 15J, 20, and a single known example in 21J AND 23J(?).

I believe the leader of the Highly Secret M.I.T. Encounter Group has been working on a catalogue of watch regulators for several decades.

Will this ever be published?

Otay watches also have an unusual regulator.

Sorry for the big pictures!
I had changed it, but the editing time was over.
But next time I know what to do.

Jon outed my friend. ;) We all hope he will publish it one day.

Peter, since the picture is hosted off site, if you resize the picture it should just change. You don't need to edit it here.

Its address is http://pw.mikrolisk.de/gal/albums/kugler77/Illinois_model2_Regulator.jpg

If that does not work, it is because the MB software is trying to remember image size and I don't think it does that.

This pic is of a Tucker's Regulator. This has the square center as opposed to the round center on a Teske's Regulator. This is found on an early Springfield Hampden, grade 36, 15J. This watch was listed as being RRG when produced.

Hello,

I´m asking myself who invented that regulator that was used for the most Waltham model 72.
I have not found anything about that.

I thought it was Woerd, but I cannot find the patent. Woerd did invent the star regulator and the long tadpole. I know I have a copy of the short tadpole but I cannot find it right now.

Hello Tom,

I was not able to find that short tadpole regulator either, because of that I asked here:)
I`m working on a document with all the regulator patents from 1858 to 1940 with a short introduction on regulators in common. It´s not a big thing, just to have them all together in one document with the ability of searching them not only by date and inventor, but also from the picture of the regulator.

But it is a lot of work so it will take a few days...

I would be happy to hear about the short tadpole regulator to bring that patent together with the others.

Thanks Peter

Ok here are two of my favourites:

A real oddball to begin with and one not too unusual one.

Here is an example of Teske's Regulator found on a Hampden Railway. THis differs from the Tucker's Regulator that I post above in that the center section is circular.

Re the Tucker/Teske regulator, at one time Tucker advertised that some 300,000 or so Hampdens had his regulator on them; although Hampden thought that they were using (and paying royalties for) Teske's regulator. As I recall, Tucker sued Teske/Hampden for patent infringement, but I don't know what the outcome was.

Regarding Peter's question, here is a picture of the two Waltham tadpole regulators. The one with the short tadpole is Fogg's patent regulator. The crooked long-tailed tadpole was described as a patent heart cam regulator, but I don't know who invented it (was that the Woerd patent?).

Here is a picture of the regulator used by Vacheron & Constantin, similar to the DeLong regulator that Tom referred to earlier in this thread. This bears the 1904 Swiss patent date, although there is an earlier 1884 U.S. patent for the same mechanism (patent #291,780).

-- oops. That obviously was the patent picture that I intended to post second. Here is a picture of the actual regulator, both in the 1884 configuration and the 1904 form.

Hello,
back to that Waltham regulator by Fogg, I was not able to find that patent, does someone have it
or the number?
The other regulator is indeet designed by Woerd in 1877 the patent number is 197710.
This is really a very interesting topic!

It would be greatly appreciated if some specific references on the ‘snail’ regulator (papers, patents, etc) could be provided. This regulator is quite broadly used in some high-end Swiss watches (e.g. Patek, Philippe & Co.). Thank you in advance.

My favorite of the snail cam regulators is Wilmot's patent. This is actually found marked on some balance cocks.

I can't find a picture with the full marking, but here is one with Wilmot's name erased. F. Wilmot patent 192,197 July 16, 1872. I would post a picture of the patent but I have to go catch a plane right now and don't have time to webalize it.

Tom,
Thank you for your kind post # 5056. It contains one typographical error: Wilmot’s patent No. is 129,197 and not 192,197. It this patent Francois Wilmot claims that he is ‘of the city, county, and State of New York’, however the concepts of his ideas appear to have originated in Switzerland and were demonstrated in Swiss works before the date of the US Patent. Do you have any additional information on the subject? Was the effectiveness of this regulator studied in any published material?

Thanks Greg for posting the Aurora ... I was hoping someone would show that regulator and your nickel 15 Ruby movement is spectacular!

Hi Greg. That Aurora is enough to make a Waltham collector switch over. Very nice! Can you share some of your photo techs as far as how you get the color of gold as well as the blueing to show up like that? Thanks, Paul

Hello,

OK I see that the short tadpole regulator seems to be a cryptic thing!
I was not able to find out anything about it. The is no patent of all the inventors that were named here.
Not Fitch, Fogg, Woerd:???::???:
Maybe someone can solve that mystery.

Thanks Peter

Paul,

The photograph of my Aurora was taken a number of years ago using film. I'm no camera buff, but what I used was a 35 mm camera with slow film and set up near a window on a sunny day.

Not on a pocket watch but a very neat regulator

https://mb.nawcc.org/

The regulator is on the balance wheel and is the two "bars" pointing to about 2 o'clock and 8 o'clock on the balance. They drive weights that slide along the helical balance arms to regulate this free sprung wrist watch. This was Elgin's top line self winding watch.

The micrometric regulator used by Elgin on their C.H. Hulburd model is another interesting one. The later form (upper image) is very similar to the one that Peter showed on the first page of this thread, as used on the Hamilton grade 400 and also several of the Illinois thin models. A screw under the balance cock pulls a block and peg against the regulator tip with tension provided by a spring pushing the other way. However, the first few hundred Hulburds used the lower mechanism. On top of the cock you can see the same return spring that is, in this version, visually balanced by a lever that pushes the regulator.

On the underside of the balance cock from the lower image you can see that the screw pushes a lever that is attached through the cock to the visible lever on top of the cock. A rather awkward arrangement and it is easy to see why it was quickly discontinued.

Here is Elgin's more commonly used micrometer regulator, found on a great many of their mid-grade to top-of-the-line models. [This example from the 19j 0-size gr.205].

The regulator is not uncommon and is found on many model 83 Walthams. I don't know the name of it. Maybe Tom M or Jon can chime in with its name.

Hello Tom,

I do not know the name, but it was invented by O. Ohlson in 1906.
Patent number 818043.
The question is, if there are correct names for the regulators!?
I think the most names like star wheel or so are just colloquial names.

I have searched the resources that I am aware of, including the patent search at pocketwatchdatabase.com, however, I have not been able to find any patent information for the regulators that Elgin used on their C.H. Hulburd presentation model (grade 446). They used a rather complicated version initially (bottom image) and very quickly simplified it a little for the rest of production (upper image). I don’t believe this was used on any other Elgins. Does anyone know if these designs were patented?

Since this old thread has been resurrected, here are some more interesting regulators from my image files. (Only the two Waltham's currently belong to me.) In order, they are:

1. Mershon's patent rack and pin regulator Type I (scythe style) on E. Howard & Co. Model 1862 (Series III) movement SN 3,518.

2. Mershon's patent rack and pin regulator Type II (curved T style) on EH&Co Model 1862 (Series III) nickel plated and damaskeened movement SN 21,576. This is one 'of only 20 nickel finished Model 1862 movements with Mershon's regulator.

3. Reed's patented "whiplash" or "swan's neck" regulator on nickel movement SN 18,097. This movement is an anomaly, as it was clearly held back for a year or two and finished after nickel plated finish and Reed's patent regulator both were otherwise introduced over 2,400 serial numbers later.

4. Reed's patent regulator as implemented on a Reed chronometer movement. A patent dispute with Charles Fassoldt over Reed's regulator patent discouraged EH&Co from marking Reed's regulator patent on their watches. George Reed had no such inhibitions, though this particular Reed movement does not seem to carry that patent date.

5. An Elgin micrometer regulator on a Grade 91 21 jewel convertible.

6. Earlier in this thread it was stated that only one 21 jewel example existed of a Waltham watch with Fogg's patent vibrating stud regulator. Well, either this AWCo Grade KW20 movement SN 150,024 is it, o'r it is a second one, as both ends of the vibrating arm arbor run in hole jewels. As mentioned elsewhere, SN 150,024 may be the first 21 jewel American watch.

7. A Fogg's cam (a.k.a., "tadpole") regulator on one of my 21 jewel AWCo Grade Model 1872's, SN 1,265,944, a gold dome model out of the fourth run of AWCo Grade movements.

None are uncommon or anything but this thread seems to be missing some pictures. Here are some basics.

Waltham model 70. Key and stem. Woerd regulator. Personally I like the double arm :)

The one Clint posted is my favorite version of the Hunter & Moseley regulator added to a 16s model 1, but here is the more common large size found on the 18s.
20210712_191016_Burst01~3.jpg

Last but not least... Elgin used this on the 16s grades 107 &108, and 3&4. I don't have any info on a patent though... Maybe someone knows? It's a very nicely functioning system.
