This may seem barbaric but hacksaws work pretty well. I make the initial mark
with a regular lathe tool and then make the rest of the cut off using a fine blade hacksaw while running the lathe at low speed. Move the saw back and forth so it doesn't clog. Give it a whirl :) .

Righto Chuck! I figured we weren't talking about a finished cut. I use this method when I cut off lengths of rod to be finished after with real tools. Its analagous to pushing a board through a tablesaw except that in this case the work is spinning and the saw is moving slowly.
If this has no connection to the original
question Jim, please specify with more detail what you're trying to do and we'll give it another whack.

Thanks Guys...and to you Chuck a particular
tnx for your 'break down'/maintenance of the Peerless headstock some time ago...was able to apply the details to my Derby' lathe...fit
it w/an O ring and overhauled it at the same time...re: this issue, have taken the hacksaw
blade one step lower and used my jeweller's
saw to good effect...it's amazing how the answer lies right in front of you and w/o
a sharp smack to the area of the right cerebral, escapes you...thanks for the insight...Jim
