Hi, I just bought a wind up by hand watch and it winds all the way up to 37 turns with no resistance. What is overwinding and how do I figure out how many turns to do?

    Thanks

There is no such thing as over winding a time piece, its just a myth.

    Hi Mike,
Does the watch run? It sounds like you might have a broken mainspring.

    Hi Mike,

If the watch still runs, it may be that the mainspring in your watch has a slipping bridle of the type fitted in automatic watches, to prevent damage when the spring is fully wound. Is it in fact an automatic?

The phrase 'overwound' is a common but inaccurate diagnosis for a watch which doesn't run even though fully wound, when there's actually something amiss in a different part of the train.

    Regards,

    Graham

Thanks, Graham. I didn't think about it being an automatic.

If the poster will tell us what the watch is, I will move this thread to the appropriate watch forum where it will get more response.

The watch is brand new and runs flawlessly. When wound completely to the point of no more winding it runs for 59 hours. It is wound by hand. The first response is what I needed to know. Thank you everyone.
