hey guys,
mike here. new to the board, new to (perhaps) collecting watches. i love 'em.

i posted here a couple of days ago asking about - what turned out to be - a 1937 seneca/sherwood. i'm still debating whether i want to drop the $200. to have it cleaned/serviced. i did however bring it to my local jeweler, whom i happen to know fairly well (small town you know). he didn't really know a whole lot about the hamilton, but he did however break out his secret stash of watches for me to check out.

these are watches that were part of the stocking inventory when he bought the store! i asked him why he still had them and he said, "well, you know, when you buy a jewelry store, you want to put your own stuff in there...not someone elses". thus explaining why he has three of four boxes of watches that apparently get progressively better as one works through them.

i was struck by one watch in particular as being one i would like to own...it's big, heavy, retro and i think extremely cool looking...alas as my love is just finishing nursing school, and our strained budget is worn out and near collapse (being a single income family for almost two years now),
i had to walk away sans the manly wrist candy... :(

i went back to the store with an idea..."Jim," i said, "your busy selling jewelry and whatnot...maybe we can work out a deal..." so now i'm currently in possesion of the first batch..."you can't have the good stuff yet" Jim said to me.

so here are to pictures for your consideration...first - the object of my fascination - the second - the first batch of the watches i'm endeavoring to find more information about...in the hope of procuring a buyer/s for said batch...

my questions:

can anyone speak to the big wittenaur automatic?

i can post separate pictures of each watch for you to look at; would this be appropriate?

can anyone advise me of a centralized, commercial, online establishment that i could go to and establish values? i.e. kelly blue book for cars, audiogon for audio equipment, etc.

thanks in advance and i look forward to reading your thoughts.

my very best regards,

mike

p.s. okay...i couldn't resist posting the digicom peugeot...wtf?! :)

Your best bet for establishing "values" is ebay, and I'm afraid you're liable to be disappointed. Most of that lot look to be common quartz and ladies quartz watches that won't be of any particular interest to most people. The big Wittenaur looks neat, although I'm a bit confused by the display; I'm guessing the second button rotates the outer ring, which is otherwise unattached to the rest of the movement. The digicom looks cool too...could definitely see a retro lover wanting that.

rob, thanks, that's what i was afraid of...at least the ebay part...it sure would be nice to go to one site that simply listed, by manufacturer, the make and model with a pic of every watch......ever......uh made..... ahhh.... never mind .... i guess i'll have to stick with ebay ! :(
best, mike

I just took a quick look through ebay myself, and I'm actually quite suprised at what some of these might go for. Given that they're NOS, in box, you might actually get some decent money for some of them. If your guy has any documentation (bills of lading, etc) that might help too. It might be worthwhile to have him (or yourself, if you're able) take the backs off and take pictures of the modules. Longines used to have their own calibers that were fairly highly jeweled; stuff like that will sell better then if its a more generic ISA type.
