I have just this second finished stripping down a Waltham 1908 23J Vanguard with up/down wind indicator... I expected a few extra gears and things but didn't expect 18 of them (gears/plates/screws) PLUS what looks like a mini differential complete with planet gear which adds a further 9 parts... that's 27 extra parts just for the wind indicator!

I will post a picture if I don't lose anything and manage to get this thing back together again.

Ah, so that'll be why the average asking price for a wind-indicator 1908 is so much higher than for the bog-standard model... We're paying for 27 extra parts - quite a significant increase I'm sure we'll all agree ;-)

Joking aside, I agree with the point I think you're trying to make. I'm sure the same functionality could have been achieved in a much simpler way.

'Oh, my giddy aunt'...Haven't heard that in yonks! Anyway, Mark, at least you didn't say that you were gob-smacked when you had a butchers' at the number of parts: That would really confuse most of our American members.:)
