• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

I've seen some by Niton and Haas Neveux.

Half of these names have been lost to the mists of time. Robert Gygax?

Luckily, Gygax has not been lost to time. I know Gygax was a supplier to Gruen, I own a couple.
At one point "Les Fils de Robert Gygax" became the largest manufacturer of watch cases in St. Imier.
Not sure of exact establishment date but here they are in Davoine 1894-95 at Rue de Vallon 26. Buildings still there.

Robert Gygax moved to St. Imier in 1880. Before he was mentioned as casemaker in Bleienbach (40 miles east of St. Imier), the first evidence I found is from 1874. His sons (Robert and Walther) took over in 1914 and the company was renamed into "Les Fils de Robert Gygax".

It's always curious how these once established companies more or less disappear from the collective memory.

Hi,

What are these good for? I know dual hour hands, but dual minutes?

Cheers, Bernhard
Not all time zones use the same minute-time. See Half Hour and 45-Minute Time Zones, discussing half-hour and 45-minute time zones. A dual-time-zone watch needs two minute hands (and many that I have seen have them because they have an entirely separate dial and set of hands for each zone) to permit each zone to have its own minute-time. Of course, before there were time zones, each location at a different longitude had its own time, again making two minute hands necessary to show the exact time in two such different locations.

I've had a few watches with these minute hands and also assumed it was for the reason that Fred and Pat outlined in the other thread.

Here is a combination timer from Jon Hanson's website that also depicts the relative time differences between NY:

Oddly, I've never seen a CT with duel minute hands

Here is a watch with an exposed balance and unique hands. The hours and minutes are indicated by a butterfly and bee (missing).
I believe this watch was most likely produced for educational purposes to teach children to tell time.

I had read this in the past, in a book the author estimates that three thousand to five thousand pieces were built, but it is only an estimate nothing precise.Personally it seems to me an overestimate There also seems to have been some problems between Record and Holy Freres.

Are there serial numbers recorded for existing examples - either movement numbers or case numbers? I have found these to be helpful in estimating actual production out of a larger block of numbers. If all numbers cluster within 2000 then that would support the lower estimate.
