• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

Hello all, I'm new to the NAWCC. I have purchased what I believe to be a English provincial tall case clock. It has me a bit confused as to weather or not there has been previous alterations to it and trying to identify its origin and approximate date. Strange thing about it is that the brass dial was fixed to the case not to the timepiece. This doesn't seem to be how these older clocks (1750-1790-ish) were constructed. I believe the clock case should be able to be removed without having to remove the hands on the timepiece.
I can find no names of the timepiece manufacturer but am told by a expert clock repair man here in Colorado that it is of English origin. Most all of the features of the clock cabinet indicate it is English but nothing to prove it. I have a few pix attached if anyone can help, I' d sure appreciate it.
Thanks,
Jamison - Colorado Springs

I'm sorry, I wasn't sure whether to reply to thread or post reply. Anyhow, did you see the pictures I posted and does it look like the real Mccoy or a replica?

I'm sorry to say it does not look English at all. The dial, brass outer, case, movement etc all look wrong..

I agree, Not English. The dial looks very odd. Also the peculiar crest-like ornament on the brass outer surround.

Hi LeSage, and a belated welcome to the forum,

I'm sorry to say this is a modern confection, possibly as recent as this century. As has already been commented, the whole construction is at odds with usual 18th and 19th century UK longcase practice. The design detail in the case, the thin veneers, the use of modern screws in its construction, the movement with pressed metal parts, the screwed pillars, the gong rather than a bell, the stopwork on the barrels, the strange cast brass movement stand, and many other features all confirm the nature of it. I doubt if it could even be regarded as a replica, more of a pastiche.

I suspect that your clock repairer may not have had much exposure to real English longcases!

I have to hope that you didn't pay a lot for this clock.

Regards,

Graham

Looks like very post-war and certainly not UK.
Glass door, weird numerals, thin plates and geared barrel arbors.

I'd steer clear well of the Colorado "repair man"

Wow, Gladly I did not pay much for it and this is exactly why. I suspected some of what you said but didn't realize the extent of the counterfeit. I won't spend any money on it, but it does run quite well as a consolation. Thank you one and all.

Glad you didn't pay a lot for it - it really is mash-up. But at least it runs and you know what it is (or isn't!) and can enjoy it for the time being.
