Been to Birmingham (UK) clock & watch fair today, not very good although I did purchased a nice clock, Gebr. junghams, with disc pendulum with balls on scales, plate 1171, but I have never seen a fork made out of bent brass before, probably homemade and the torsion spring is very wide.
Serial number 27305 book saying 1910 not sure how accurate the book is, hopefully J Hubby will see this post and have a better idea unless anyone else has any definitive information.

These two posts by John might help to date-range your clock. Probably somewhere in that 1911-1912 period:

Could be plate 1625 but the two are essentially the same. Some minor differences in that the saddle doesn't have the two holes per side.

Hi Kurt
Thanks for that, you are probably correct as to age , it’s in a bit of a state but should come up okay , not seen a Junghans before with a wood case and a brass front door.

Any telltale marks on the underside?

No marks that I can see underneath Kurt, but will have a better look when I get to it because it’s covered in crud, I will have to make a top block for it because I don’t think they make them that wide , and I think if I remember correctly on my other Junghan I had to put a slight twist on the torsion spring to set the beat but that was a few years ago I did it.

Been busy today making a top block for Junghans because the homemade one that came with it is useless, Jyst was kind enough to measure one he has for me , i superglued 2 bits of brass together milled it to size tapping drilled 2 holes and threaded to 9BA probably not the correct thread but who will know, drilled 1 hole for snug fit for pin , turned up 2 9BA countersunk screws and blued them , bonded the pin in on the 1/2 that had the threads in and broached the other hole to a slip fit .

My Junghans has silver balls again, before and after pictures, it’s amazing what a bit of bicarbonate of soda & salt in hot water can do.
Dell

That is amazing! What are the proportions of bicarbonate of soda & salt? Do you think it might have any beneficial effect on this badly corroded Schatz 59 Carriage I've just overhauled the movement on?
(apologies if I've hijacked this thread)

Hi Frank
It’s not for brass it’s for silver and silver plate but for future reference just a tablespoon of each, as for the brass I am afraid you will just have to use elbow grease.

apologies for the hijacked-answer .....

Frank, I put those into the ultrasonic cleaner. Make sure everything is under the waterlevel because the vapes will blacken all that is sticking out..

apologies again for this hijacked question: What cleaning solution do you use and at what temperature for how long? Based on some of the suggestions I've read on this forum I've been using ZEP at approx. 120° - 130° for 20 min. or so.

Gyro,

I use: either Elma Luxury Clean (Elma Red 1:9 = water based conscentrate) or Tickopur RW77 (when used in ultrasonic 5 - 10% for 1 - 10 minutes).
both at 80 degrees C (176 Fahrenheit). I always do 2 x 5 minutes.
Afterwards I sift the liquid, store it and use it again, I than add a little Tick or Elma. (we reamin frugal :;))

Peter, thanks for your reply. Researching on Google indicates that both cleaners are excellent. Unfortunately they don't appear to be available here in the US. Amazon apparently had the Tickopur RW77 at one time, but is now unavailable. Amazon does have Elma Tec Clean in 3 varieties (A1; A4; S1) for $70 / 2.5 liters (ouch!). But they're formulated for industrial use and don't seem to be suitable for cleaning clock movements: A1 for electronics & optics - A4 Alkaline Universal cleaner/degreaser - S1 mildly acidic for non-ferrous and light metals

No need to reply, we've taken up enough of Dells post... Apologies Dells!
