We were out today at a antique store we found and my wife found her usual knick nacks and I found a watch. It's a Waltham, non-running, open face, grade 620 with 15 jewels made in 1919. Movement is Nickel in Fahay's Montauk 20 year case. Not sure what the case is for finish. It is badly brassed on the back cover. I still have to clean it up. I may look for another cover. She had some watchmakers tools, but she could not find them. She put them in a secure place, that she could not find them. Left my name and number , so I hope she finds them.

Neat old Waltham. It's obvious that it has seen very heavy use in its life. It does look a lot better with the polishing, and there's little harm done in removing another .0001" of the outer gold.

It also looks like the movement has had a lot of cleanings over the years. This is evidenced by what looks like a bit of the brass showing beneath the nickel. It seems that someone wanted to keep this watch running well. I hope the staff is good and that you can get it running easily so it can keep its record intact. Cheers.

How do you find out what grade of gold it is and if it is plated or filled? It looks alot better in person than the pics.

The Montauk grade of case from Fahy's has a number of different descriptions of ranging gold purity and warranties, but it is gold filled. Yours has a 20 year guarantee as stamped and is(was) probably 10k.

Shining up the underlying brass does help temporarily but unfortunately brass will oxidize quickly. No big deal, if you have a jewelers cloth it will come right back.

Nice find. Everyone should have at least one 620 in their collection. Lovely dial too.

You could consider adding some sort of fob/chain (to make it less easy to drop.)

I believe it's been service a few times. Using my loupe, I can see 1967 with initials and some other writing with numbers. Still trying to figure out the others.
