Please post your New York Watch Company (Springfield) private label watches in this thread. When posting, please include photos whenever possible (obeying copyright law, of course). For the description, please provide the serial number, model and grade information, and any information you have obtained about the retailer who's name appears on the watch. The more information, the better. We would like to make this more than just a list. It will, hopefully, become a prime resource for private label research. Thanks in advance to all who contribute!

I believe it to be the same grade as a Theo E. Studley, as per advertising describing that grade posted on the forum.

Private label for S. Smith. Altoona, pa.

Nothing online and nothing from the county historical society on this p.l.

    Rick,
Found a little about (likely) your Mr. Smith. First name Samuel. He was 44 years old in the 1870 census. His store was closed down by the sheriff in 1884. There are some other hits (including a hint about running for political office) if you search on +"samuel smith" jeweler altoona.

Thank you Dave, I'll try to run that through anscestry too!

There were so many s. Smith's... I couldn't find anything by regular searching online. The historical society never replied. Your help is greatly appreciated!

I find it helps to put a census year in the search line, especially with common names. I added 1880 first and didn't get much. With 1870 added instead, I got an Altoona census hit, which gave me his first name with 'jeweler' as occupation.
