I have tried to find info about this watch but have come up short. Would anybody be able to point me in the right direction to find out the history of this watch and other other valuable infomation that might be able to help be decide if i'm going to hold onto it or sell it on ebay. I have added a couple pictures of it here as well.

Hi,

Your watch dates to roughly 1874 or so. It's not one of the rarer grades, but New York Watch Co. watches are collectible in general. If you check eBay you will probably see some other similar New York key wind watches for sale and this should give you an idea of what it might sell for.

Greg

P. S. to Tom: I'm not actively collecting NY serial numbers since my website service through AOL went down. I might start a new site someday. In any event, this thread is as good a place as any to post info on new New York sightings.

I don't know about a complete listing, but quite a few are listed in the booklet: Serial List - New York Watch Company-Springfield, Mass., R.J. Ziebell, Old Post Office Clock Shop, Ipswitch, MA, 1972.

Hi shazam:

Welcome to the NAWCC American Pocket Watch Message Board!

We'll try to answer your questions but it would be helpful if you could post pictures of the movement (the "works") and markings stamped inside of the watch case (you can ignore any "hand-scratched" characters, they're watch repairers' marks), the clearer and sharper, the better. Clearness and sharpness is important as differences in makes, watch grades or case material markings can be subtle. Other pictures will help a little, but these are the most important. We may be able to identify it by the shape of the plates. In trying to open the watch, you might find the information in the Encyclopedia article entitled "How To Open A Pocket Watch Case" useful.

It's also helpful if you can post (i.e., type out) all the markings that are inside of the case and that are on the movement, especially the movement serial number, in case they can't be seen in the picture(s).

Good luck,

Hi Kent
Thanks for the welcome. I have been messing with watches for afew years. I am a watch/clock maker. I am wanting to know is if it's a Hampden or New York. The watch is in it's original Gf double hinge keystone case which is open face and serial number 12769 or 3 cant tell if the last digit is a 9 or 3 . it has a inscription on the inside lid of it and a date of 1874. The watch had a damaged dial on it and I was not able to tell if it was a New York dial or a Hampden. But anyway it is a 15J Kw Ks Rail Way with gold jewel settings. and has nickel plates. Movement is marked Springfield Mass Rail-Way Adj.Temp with a serial #57841. I do not have a New york dial at moment, so I put a Hampden dial on it for the moment. So any thoughts on it would be great.

Thanks

Congratulations on owning a nice, New York Watch Co. movement!

According to page 19 of the book Serial List - New York Watch Company-Springfield, Mass., R.J. Ziebell, Old Post Office Clock Shop, Ipswitch, MA, 1972, which consists of data taken "From the original inventions (read that as inventories) of 1872 thur 1876" movements 57801-57900 (Rail-Way) were in the Jeweling Department in 1875.

Awesome. Now I just need to find a New York Watch Co dial for it. Thank you for your help. I collect lots of various watches and come across a lot of unusual watches. So I will probably be posting more as I go with new finds and some that are currently in my collection.

Thanks

Bob:

In general, the dials ought to tend to have similar, or the same, markings as the movements.

It'd be easier to help you if you started a new thread for each watch (maybe continue the first watch in this thread) and include pictures of the movements and the case markings.

Good luck,

Now that I see it, I believe that "Albert Clark" is an 11-jewel, factory grade of the New York Watch Co.

An old thread that I'd forgotten about. Perhaps we can start compiling the data sequentially in the encyclopedia? It would make the data more useful.

Hi, I did not realize that there was already a New York Watch Co post. Hi, the New York Watch Company Pocket Watch arrived a few days ago and when I removed the dial I found absolutely nothing; No Number or Maker; under the Balance Cock is a Number. Regards Ray

Hi, I am still wondering about the lack of Name and number:???: Regards Ray
My guess is that it was some stuff finished up from "plates in progress", perhaps by Hampden. Watch Cos. (and their successors) threw very little away. It's a little surprising that most of the parts are unnumbered but perhaps they had yet to be matched to one another.

Here is an Albert Clark that should be from the first year in Ziebell's list but does not appear in the list. That might mean it was one of the few that just worked when it was made instead of spending a year in finishing.
