I'm not sure if we are counting the New York Watch Co. of Springfield in the early Hampden's or not. Hampden Watch Co. arose from the ashes of the second fire at the factory I think. It was named for the county in central Massachusetts where we will be having our National Convention in June.

Here are some watches that were made there.

The E. W. Bond came with and without a center jewel in the top plate. Here is the one with the jewel. But in a custom made aluminum display case.

Tom, thanks for posting your watches. I really did not study Teske's regulators until
I grabbed a Rockford model 1 15J with a Teske added to it (and it looked factory).

Now I did study Hampden enough that they incorporated Teske regulators on their
movements. Thanks for sharing.

couple other early ser# ------- Duhme & Co no ser# on back but 4270 under balance & between plates & early 19J stem wind 1040
I have others if someone is collecting there early serial numbers.
Does anyone know why a few of these early New York watches that have shown up with jewelers names don't have serial # on the back plates ? - Samples for the jewelers ? - I've seen a couple - seems too many to be mistakes ?

This is SN 48876, I think about 1873. It's a "Charles E. Hayward" model. An NAWCC Bulletin article of 2002 "Charles Rood and Henry Cain" illustrates SN 54047 which looks to be the same movement and describes it as "one of the last products of the [New York Watch] company" and "became the Hampden Model 1." Any thoughts about this watch would be appreciated.

The cap (I don't recall what the correct technical term is...escutcheon?) over the click, etc., is the later Hampden style and does not appear to be original to this mvt.

This is NYWCo SN #12385.
This one is also a 'Charles E. Hayward model,
housed in a quite nice octagonal, coin silver
case, possibly a Fortenbach. (Please excuse
the iffy photo quality; it's a gilt movement.)

NYWCo 12385.jpg

At one point I had a severe case of interest in
the case, and was able to find 5 or 6 others on
the internet. They held movements by several
makers, typically manufactured in the very early
1870's.

Bob,

I have a mvt with a visible s/n but no name or other markings. Weird but interesting.

A somewhat better pic of my Homer Foot. The serial # is 5951

The Homer Foot grade originated with New York, however the fledgling Hampden Watch Co. was advertising this grade in 1878 (see ad in Hernick & Arnold). Further, the more mature Hampden Watch Co. was still selling them in 1883. It should be kept in mind that (1) 3/4 plate grades are far less common than full plate ones and (2) the dials for the 3/4 plate grades are not interchangeable the full plate ones, making the possibility of dial switching somewhat less likely.

For those who are interested and coming to the 2019 National Convention in Springfield, we have decided to make my presentation on the New York Watch Co. of Springfield rather than the Waltham Watch Co. The talk is scheduled for 11:00 am on Friday: "Springfield's Own Watch Co., The New York Watch Co."

I hope to incorporate as much as I can of the discussion here in the talk to demonstrate how much we can learn from these Message Board discussions.

Tom,

I have some info that might be helpful. For a start here is an ad from the American Horological Journal, July, 1871.

I have a couple more NY watches at the bank and will bring them home for pics, etc. Also, a rare bit of important ephemeral information.

Thanks Greg. I reread Mike Harrold's article in the Bulletin and it is all very interesting. I will be holding my material pretty much to the early period but I am not planning on saying much about Providence and Mozart. Rood may be the major hero as far as Springfield is concerned, but Cain, Perry and the rest are all important as well.

FWIW, here's some s/n data on the early 3/4 plate New York grades. The early ones are the 20 ligne 19 jewel stem winders that are signed "Springfield". These generally have the two exposed winding wheels, but a few are known with a plate over these wheels. The other 3/4 plate grades are John L. King, Homer Foot, Albert Clark, H. G. Norton, George Walker and E. W. Bond. It appears that some of these were made in either 16 or 18 size (early ones are described as being 20 ligne). Most are key wind, but some were made as stem winders. Ziebell compiled some run data from the surviving inventory records and it is also included.

From the data in the previous post, it looks like the early "Springfield" stem winders go from perhaps 1 to a little over 1000 (#1869 seems to be an anomaly), the 3/4 plate key winders start around 4000 and go up to 9000 (with many gaps likely, especially the closer one gets to 9000) and the mvts in the 9000 range are stem winders, most of which are E. W. Bond grades that were finished and sold by the Hampden Watch Co.

The number of mvts reported in the various s/n ranges can give an indication of which blocks were more or less completed. Of course, there is certainly a reporting bias towards the high grade and more desirable mvts (especially the 19j Springfield and the E. W. Bond), but less so for the "ordinary" ones (Clark, King, Norton, Foot).

s/n 1 - 1040, 16 reported
1040 - 4000, 1 reported
4001 - 5000, 19 reported
5001 - 6000, 32 reported
6001 - 7000, 32 reported
7001 - 8000, 9 reported
8001 - 9000, 5 reported
9001 - 9300, 18 reported (stem winders and vast majority are E. W. Bond with Hampden Watch Co. dials)

The above suggests that the later blocks from 7001 - 9000 were less completed than the ones from 4001 - 7000.

Early 1880s Hampden Watch Co. order sheet (original in my collection). Note that the Bond is available but none of the other 3/4 plate New York grades are listed.
img553.jpg

However, even in 1883 there were still some H. G. Norton and Homer Foot movements being sold as indicated by these entries in J. C. Perry's memo booklet (original in my collection).

Well, I think this is important and I will be trying to figure out how to organize it for presentation between now and June. Other than the No. 60 I do not have full plate examples in my collection, but there may be a few in my study things that I have not looked at in a while. All of my New York Watch Co. "collection" are 3/4 plate. I do not have them posted on the current AWCo Web site yet.

I did find the receipt for my other 19J Springfield that is currently with Carignan. It is sn 974 so adds another to the list. 1022 is in the first set of images in this thread and is already in the list.

We have not discussed casing on these watches and that may not be a fruitful topic. However, the E. W. Bond in the original 18K case (I believe) is marked N.Y.W.Co with a crowned 18 below the company initials. I have not seen any other examples of this case and I have wondered, since it is from the time after Dueber was around, if he may have been thinking of creating a case company around the New York name. I don't think there is any likelihood of getting more and better information, so it will remain speculation.

I recall having a State St. that was marked Springfield but I don't remember what happened to it. I think most folks think of it as a strictly Hampden product.

Tom,

I believe that correct cases are very important, especially for the 19j Springfield mvts, and it's worth noting the originality of such watches (if known or reasonably certain). #285 was found in what appears to be an original J. T. Scott & Co. case.

Also, I've seen nothing to indicate that the State St. started as a New York product. My guess is that they were all Hampden products.

I assume that you have a copy of Ziebell's little booklet. Therein he notes some data from the inventory records for a "Guy" grade. I have an idea that he might have misread "GW" as "Guy", but this is only speculation as I haven't seen the original factory inventory records (they are, I believe, in the Smithsonian...I have a cousin who works there but have never been in DC long enough to try and get a look at these records). I also believe that if "Guy" really is a corruption of "GW" that the later stands for George Walker.

I haven't made it to the bank yet to retrieve my only other two NY watches, but will try to get there soon.

For a number of years I've been looking for a "George Walker" grade made by the New York Watch Co. and have yet to see an example. Anyone seen one?

Rare NY Watch Co. product line from J. T. Scott & Co., 1876, price list (original in my collection).

This piece is very important for a number of reasons. (1) It lists the entire product line of the time with prices (probably "keystone"), (2) it mentions some grades as being made in both 16s and 18s, (3) some pendant (stem) winding, and (4) the George Walker grade.

I believe that Ziebell might have misidentified the George Walker grade in the inventory records as "Guy" but this is only a guess on my part. In any event, I've never seen one.

The number of mvts reported in the various s/n ranges can give an indication of which blocks were more or less completed. Of course, there is certainly a reporting bias towards the high grade and more desirable mvts (especially the 19j Springfield and the E. W. Bond), but less so for the "ordinary" ones (Clark, King, Norton, Foot).

s/n 1 - 1040, 25 reported (none between 400-600, only 2 between 600-900)
1040 - 4000, 1 reported
4001 - 5000, 25 reported
5001 - 6000, 43 reported
6001 - 7000, 40 reported
7001 - 8000, 12 reported (none between 7400-8000)
8001 - 9000, 6 reported (only 1 between 8500-9000)
9001 - 9300, 28 reported (stem winders and vast majority are E. W. Bond with Hampden Watch Co. dials)

The above suggests that the later blocks from 7001 - 9000 were less completed than the ones from 4001 - 7000.

Besides the names there is also the question of size, as some of the various grades were supposedly made in two sizes (roughly 16s and 18s). It will take some in hand measurements to figure out what might be going on with this.

Great work Greg!

FWIW there are two Springfields pictured in Ehrhardt's Volume 1 book on page 121, looks like the serial numbers might be 311 and 736 but the photos aren't clear enough for certainty. Similarly there's a private label A.J. Robinson, Providence RI on page 125 with serial number that might be 5912.

Sorry, finally got my sheet caught up and found two more that were not on your list. Thanks for the information, Greg!
