This discussion begs the question.
Why are you trying to buy a verge?
Is yours missing? Is yours nonfunctional?
Many times, escapements (verges) are blamed for clocks not running when the escapement is simply a victim of low power in the train.
Low power in the trains of a 38-year-old clock is almost inevitable.
How about a little back ground.
What is your skill level with repairing clocks?
RC, you're correct. Blackforest does show several versions of this part on their website. I just never thought of them as a Hermle parts house. Thank you.
Willie, the price seems to have gone up.... $38 - $50 now!
Dick, thanks for weighing in. I am quite confident in the time train. I did bush both sides of the escape wheel and polished all of the pivots and pivot holes. The problem is badly scored pallets (entrance and exit), which if I ground out and polished would have introduced all sorts of other geometry issues. The rest of the movement is in pretty good shape (after repairs) so this was the remaining problem. The Microset timer showed wild crazy readings with this assembly as is. I tried 'tightening' it (against Dave LaBounty's recommendation) and lost. He'll probable read this and snicker to himself, LOL.
I noticed that the pitting was all on one side, so if I moved the pallet over the escape wheel would then strike clean surfaces. Turns out I couldn't move the escape wheel because the pinion and arbor are one piece. So I thought I'd take the assemply apart and make a new arbor with the sholders moved 40 thou. The attached pic isn't great but it shows the old arbor and new one installed. The really hard part is getting the compression right. Third time I got lucky. The movement is back in test and so far looks promising.
Will, thank so much for taking the time to check you bone pile. If this doesn't pan out I'll send you a message and you can let know what you want for the part.
