• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

Need help identifying original movement

I have recently inherited a German schnapps cabinet clock that was believed to be purchased in the 1960s originally. The original key wind movement was replaced at some point with a battery powered movement. I don't know when this was done or by who, but the movement looks quite old as well. I'm hoping someone might be able to identify the original mechanical movement model so I can fit the original back in. The nearest I can find online is another auction on eBay for the exact same one but the picture of the movement is mostly obscured. I will upload pictures of the clock I took below. Thanks everyone for your time and help!

If you post another picture of the complete back, it might help. From what is shown I don't see any evidence that the movement was ever replaced. The partitioned sides with the round holes are puzzling.
And the general appearance of the clock, in my mind, does not suggest it ever had another movement.

Hi Dave,

The round holes are for storing schnapps glasses since this is a cabinet designed for that. I know it had a different movement originally because it has key hole in the front and the replacement movement doesn't fit the cut out. Also there is a listing at a major auction site that shows the original movement, but partially obscured. I'm not allowed to post any references to it (I was warned in private).

Thanks!

It most likely had a small 'capsule' movement that was replaced long ago. The replacement battery movement is probably 45 years old, probably much older than the original was when it died.

If you like the clock and the present movement is no longer working, I would certainly not try to go back to a small problematic mechanical. Just pop in a new quartz movement and enjoy the clock for what it is. What it WAS is not going to spark much joy ... Willie X
