while clearing a relatives house i found a silver pocket watch, it is hallmarked but has no name, i dont have a winder so i dont know if it is working order. The hallmarks are faint but appear to be: a lion, an anchor, a crucifix shaped cross, the letters AB and the number 53833 (possibly 51811)

As you have discovered, the watch movement (works) was made by the American Watch Co of Waltham, Mass. The serial number 2171962 dates it to about 1883. The movement was exported to England and cased here. The silver case was made by Alfred Bedford. What you see is the Birmingham hallmark, and the "crucifix" could be either a gothic "i" which dates the case to 1883-84, or a gothic "l" for 1885-86.
