I was at my sister's new house yesterday. She now has room to display her clocks. I didn't know she has so many clocks. Our dad always had a lot of clocks. I have two of them, a Thomas Lister tall case clock and a Barnes and Bartholomew column and splat plus a Sessions banjo just like Dad had.

Can you identify my sister's clocks? I did not open the clocks to see any maker's name. That would have helped, I know.

#1 looks German, it may well have a maker's mark on the movement.

#1 looks like a Junghans
#2-#4 should have a label on the inside behind the pendulum. If not, often the movement is stamped with the maker's logo, so you'd have to remove the dial at least.

Very pretty clocks.

Hi,

Yes, as said above, the first is indeed a Junghans clock, possibly with a B21 movement (which would date it to the second half of 1921). The other three are American - we would need to see the labels to know more, I’d guess Jerome for the second and Seth Thomas for the third. The fourth clock is the earliest, circa 1820-1830 - I believe this type is called a column and splat. Once again, we would need to see the inside to identify it. Hopefully someone can add more, as American clocks aren’t my main area.

Regards.

Thanks for the quick replies. I found a Junghans on line that looks just like #1.

I don't know why I didn't take pictures of the cases of clocks #2-4. But I texted my sister and asked her to take pictures of the labels if they are still legible.

You will need to open the door at the back of your clock and look at the back plate to see whether there is a maker's name or logo and/or a date code. Post a photo if you can.

Your clock could be a Junghans, but other German makers produced similar clocks.

As JTD stated, the only way to know for sure is to take a picture of the back of the movement
and post it here.

Regards.

Thanks for the help. I will tell my sister to open the back of the Junghans type clock and take a pic. And to take pics of the labels of the other three.

My sister sent me pictures of the inside of her clocks. Here are the inside shots along with the previously shown clocks. Thank-you for your expertise! My Dad had a lot of clocks and I guess my sister and I have the bug.

Clock #1. From your thoughts above this looks like a Junghans. Does the picture of the movement give a clue to the maker and the year?

Clock #2. She forgot to take a picture of the label of this beautiful clock. Its an OG. Correct? I will post the label when she sends me a picture.

Clock #3. It looks like the label says 30 hour spring clock. At the bottom it says Seth Thomas. So about how old?

Clock #4. This one is a Seth Thomas. Is it a 30 hour wooden works? And approx what year?

Clock #5. This is a nice one I didn't know she has! I know this is a Sessions "Adrian." I have one similar to it, shown below. So approximately what year is it.

I could be wrong, but the mantel clock looks like it contains a Junghans movement.

Unfortunately, the picture is not clear.

The movement should have a Junghans trademark and possibly a date code, which would possibly allow us to date the clock to within 6 months or so.

Is it possible that your sister could send a more crisp picture of the back of the movement or at least describe what is inscribed on the back of the movement?

The trademark should look something like this:

If my eyes make it out correctly, the Junghans looks like it has the date code of A12, putting it in the first half of 1912.

Yes, this is an OG. From the little I can make out of the movement and the label, I would suggest it is by the New Haven Clock Co. But that's just a guess. It looks like a mini OG. How tall is it? Here is one in my collection for comparison. It's about 18.25" tall.

Not a Sessions "Adrian" , rather an Ingraham "Adrian". A giveaway is the slot above the dial for regulating the rate. But a *dead* giveaway is that it says Ingraham on the back label :). I think the Ingrahams are better timepieces since they have a "half deadbeat" escapement rather than a "recoil" escapement, and the rate varies less with winding. Maybe 10x better than the Sessions.
