I bought this clock this morning at a country auction for $40. It actually runs:D. Love the stencilled eagle on the splat. The mirror is wavy, but not likely original. A great old clock:Party:

    Strong work, nicely done!

At the risk of sounding like a broken record (in the Age of Ipod, does anyone know what that means any more??), there are genuinely antique clocks to be bought very reasonably out there for the pickin'.

That stencilled eagle spat is worth the price of admission. Really good label, too. Looks like case has an older surface. Overall nice as-found condition. What's not to like??

    Thanks for sharing and enjoy!

Thanks, RM. It took a lot of willpower not to come home with 20 or 30 clocks. I couldn't believe my good fortune.
Kevin, it started at 10, so not that early:D. Worth the 3/4 hour drive to get there.

Mark, there were a few that I missed that I would have liked, like a Welch Eclipse T S and calender, an early Ingraham beehive with frosted glass, a couple of Anglo-American clocks with nice inlays, a Becker wall clock, about 6 postman's wags, and 4 old tall clocks, but I am happy with what I got, pretty much a truckfull.
There were about 8-10 clock guys there, who probably were happy enough with what they bought. Could be just a sign of the economy that people aren't paying as much as they used to. I was expecting to go home with nothing, but couldn't resist the prices. And the auctioneer was pretty fast, not looking hard for extra bids once he narrowed it down to two bidders. When one dropped out, it was auction over.

Great buy Harold. It must be something about the Candian auctions that prices are so reasonable :). We would never get a great clock like that at such a good price here in Michigan. Was it a farm auction with some clocks too or a clock auction? Please invite all of us the next time you see an auction like that. Good luck with your new Seth Thomas.

Harold, what is the top made of? Is it oak or black walnut?
    Thanks, Mark

Mark, definately not oak. From the back it looks like it could well be walnut.

That is what I was think too. That one I'm working on is very dark.
Is it solid or veneer cover?

I recall one of our chapter members did a workshop on stencilling a splat, made it look pretty easy. He used gold Rub N' Buff for the colour. Spray clear varnish, then shellac over it when dry. Looked pretty good. Hardest part is probably cutting out a stencil.

I'm going to look in some craft stores to see if they have anything that would be close in a stencil.
I would like to do it in a fruit or eagle.
