• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

Bought these at local auction. 20151122_084049.jpg 20151122_084119.jpg 20151122_085040.jpg 20151122_085313.jpg

A New Haven and a ship's anchor clock weather station. The barometer says Hull Smack Owner's Engineering & Ship Chandlery Co. LTD. The New Haven runs but the gong doesn't always want to stop at the right number (sometimes once sometimes 22). It's gonna need some attention. Nothing on the ship's anchor works. Gonna need a lot of attention.

Any information would be appreciated.

The New Haven clock is an "ogee" style. The examples in Tran Duy Ly's New Haven book date from 1881. Ly has a section dedicated to ogees in his American Clocks Volume 3. He states, "In about 1835 the two case forms, the OG and the Bevel, both made their appearance, both primarily with wood movements." The ogee "derives its name form the ogee or "S" curve that describes the shape of the molding that surrounds the clock.......clocks that did not have the curve in the molding....were referred to as Bevel clocks." I am not certain exactly when brass movements took over from wood movements, but Ly shows examples with brass movements from as early as 1839 so apparently wood movements in ogee clocks existed for only a few years. It was a very popular style, and there were many makers who manufactured them. They were produced into the 20th century according to Ly and "were still being offered in catalogs until just before World War I." Your clock appears to be a very nice original example. The veneer looks like it is in good shape, and the clock retains what are likely the original dial, hands, inside paper, and lovely lower glass. This clock probably contains a 30 hour movement. How tall is the clock? If it is about 26 inches tall that would tend to indicate a 30 hour clock. The anchor clock is very nice, but I know nothing about such pieces. Hopefully others will provide information on this "clock weather station". David, Owen.or

Funny where things end up. A smack was a type of traditional fishing boat so The Hull Smack Owner's Engineering & Ship Chandlery Co. Ltd. no doubt refers to that. According to the London Gazette of July 2 1907 a meeting was to be held at St. Andrew's Dock Hull at 12 noon on the 9th day of August 1907 with regard to the winding up of the company.

There are people that repair barometers. It looks like yours
lost the vacuum. Either that or it had been set to center at
a higher altitude.
