Hello, Mike, and welcome to the board.

Your clock was made by Junghans, a prolific German clock manufacturer. It looks as if it has a date code of "50 8" next to the Junghans trademark on the backplate, but I can not be sure. Please confirm or correct. If the inscription is "50 8", then your clock was made in August of 1950.

The style of your clock is a tambour and it is in the Art Deco school.

Your clock is time, strike and chime.

Regards.

Hello new2clocks, thanks so much! Very much appreciated. The numbers on the back ar 52 8 so I’m guessing it’s 1952, August as the manufacturing date,

August of 1952 would be correct.

Junghans were one of the few manufacturers who date coded their clocks.

We have a thread dedicated to Junghans clocks that you may wish to peruse:

Post your JUNGHANS clocks here

Regards.

Also, as I am really new to this, what does tambour, Art Deco, and “time, strike and chime” mean?

Tambour - the style of the clock (also known as Napoleon hat)
Art Deco - the genre / era - these are associated to some degree with the Art Deco era, although yours is later
time, strike and chime - the functions of the clock. It tells the time, strikes the hours, and chimes the quarters

Tambour is the shape of the case. Tambours are always mantel clocks, but mantel clocks come in all shapes and sizes. Our friends across the pond call these clocks "Napoleons", as they resemble the type of military hat that Napoleon wore. I have also heard them referred to as camel backs.

Art Deco is a style that was prevalent commencing in the 1920's. Art Deco applies to all kinds of items - clocks, watches, furniture, art work, etc.

Time, strike and chime ("TSC") means the following:

- your clock tells time.

- your clock strikes the hours, so at 7:00, your clock will strike 7 times. At 8:00, it will strike 8 times, and so on. Some clocks will strike once on the half-hour.

- a clock that chimes plays a melody on the quarter hours, such as Westminster chimes.

Clock generally are considered "Time Only" (no strike and no chime) or "Time and Strike" (strikes the hours but no chime) and "Time, Strike and Chime". For simplicity sake, a clock that strikes and chimes will be known as a clock that "Chimes".

Regards.
