I haven't seen the logo you described but have seen "J." inside of a diamond and a circle.It was at the Houston National and the label said Seth Thomas. The clock looked Japanese to me and was probably originally shipped to Japan.
Kochmann shows it on page 78 of my old copy as only Uhrenfabrik Villingen G. It goes on to say they made clocks and movements for the trade.The trademark was registered in 9/18/1901
I thought that probably meant simply clock factory in Villingen Germany until I looked at the list of companies in Tyler's "Black Forest Clocks. It shows that company name as incorporating in 1899 and in another reference tells of Jerger joining the company in 1914 when he took over technical leadership.
I have since seen the same logo on a one of the Chicago style old Japanese clocks that have recently been flooding the market from China. As usual you couldn't read much from the inside label.
