While looking in my spring box for a spring, I found this "monster". It's too big for a Sonora Chime..........maybe a timeclock? Any comments.

It is 1 5/16" wide X .026 thick x approx 130"L...I haven't let it loose because I'm sure I have no way to rewind it. This could probably "eat" you alive.

Best,

Richard T.

I too have a monster that I don't know what it was for. It is 1" X .028" X 112" long. The only thing I have found it useful for is proof testing the spring winders that I make. The wound diameter is just over 2 inches.

Re:

How about an English double or triple fusee clock? I have fit a few springs like this over the years.

How could it be for a barrel with a loop end?

I think SB was referring to the first spring pictured.

Re:

Well, Scottie and ticktock both agree that it is for a victrola. I honestly had no idea. Just knew it was a very large spring and couldn't think of a clock that it might go in.

Thanks,

Still time for other replies and/or comments.

Re:

Wow, that's a big spring. I imagine that a fellow would have to be quite careful with that - after an unintentional release it would be emergency room time!

Wow! Some spring. I've never had occasion to deal with a "monster" spring on my Joe Collins winder, but I'm confident of its ability to handle dang near everything. Everybody should own one. (Unsolicited plug)

Re:

The springs for some pull-down metal shop shutters are about 4" wide and 6-10" dia when wound. Most shutters use several.

Re:

I have an old time clock movement that has a comparable spring, only with a loop end, similar to the one in Joe's picture. It is an intimidating spring.

I've never seen one that big that would fit in a barrel though, or a barrel that large, and I've never seen a time clock movement with a barrel.

Re:

Hello!

That is what drew my conclusion to a wind up phonograph. An antique wind up phonograph has very large barrel(s). These machines have 1-4 barrels in them depending on their quality. Obviously there are some clocks out there that handle very large springs, however, you would probably never find a barrel of that size in any clock.

Thanks!
