Man I'm hot! First off my online bidding habit has to stop. I accidentally bid too much for this clock by accident but I am willing to pay for my mistakes. It arrived today packed well except for one thing, They taped the Pendulum to the 15 year old label basically destroying it. The picture on line had the pendulum hung correctly (though I don't believe it or the dial are original) and the label was the best thing this clock had going for it. Started a ticket on it since as usual these days there is no phone number to call and have heard nothing yet. Though I feel I paid to much for it in the first place this just added salt to the wound.

sounds like a return to me... they killed the value and delivered something less than you purchased and was promised.

Thank you . That's the way I feel also. Guess I needed someone else to agree with me. That was just plain careless.

A bit late now, god forbid that to happen again, however try using a hair dryer to heat the tape and slowly peel it off, most likely leave some glue on the lable however would look better than it is.
Just another thought, if you want to keep it, you could use a water based paper glue or even PVA wood glue and glue the lable back on then use the hair dryer to peel it off the lable?
    Or send it back!!!

It sounds like the person who packed it does not know much about clocks
At least they secured the pendulum

I bought a Waterbury 44 calendar clock on Ebay and the guy put a piece of foam over the glass front and wrapped blue masking tape around the back which peeled part of the papers on the back, them put it in a box upside down.

Both movements came out and went through the reverse painted glass door which broke in 4000 pieces.

It had a return policy which he didn't want to honor but after some threats and negotiation he returned most of my money and I kept the clock.

I was able to have the glass repainted by Tom Morberg and I restored the rest of the clock which is working today.

I had asked him to fill the case with popcorn but no listening took place.

I saved the hands and assorted screws and small parts from inside the box mixed with bazillions of little glass shards.

    PITA

Wow. I too have had bad deals on eBay. I had a guy ship me an ogee with the weights and pendulum still hung in it. This resulted in the whole case coming apart at the corners and the back coming free. Miraculously it did not break the original glasses or tear up the label. I decided that shipping the clock back would be more dangerous than just taking some money back. This company though is an estate liquidator and should know better (though I have Auction houses treat clocks badly also). I've filed a ticket with the company and will see where I go from here.

I've had a few damage problems but most have been well done. The best thing to do is tell the seller how you want them to pack the clock. I have even offered a few extra dollars to compensate them for the extra work. We shouldn't have to do that but a few $ spent could save some real heartache! Don't think that they value the clock as much as we do!

When I buy at auction I either collect myself or use a specialist carrier, effectively man and van. Not just within the UK either, I've moved clocks brought in from other parts of mainland Europe the same way, From Denmark, Nederlands, and Switzerland. I did have one posted from Lisbon but that was a lantern clock so rather more robust.

Yes, and tape across original finish means nothing to these mugs. It makes me crazy.

I usually don't even attempt to acquire clocks that look too fragile. However, I recently had a fretwork mahogany clock (fragile) ship from North Carolina, that was maybe the best pack job I've ever seen. The clock was disassembled, and all the case parts wrapped and boxed in 2 separate boxes with bubble wrap and foam peanuts. Then, both boxes in a large wood crate, with foam peanuts in the crate.

However, some of the "professionals" appear to be cheaping out. I've had too many wrapped in crumpled up newsprint. Not enough, and scary.

Years ago, I had an inexpensive Vienna Regulator shipped from Germany. I was nervous. But when the clock got here, it was perfect. I was surprised to find all the clock was packed in, was crumpled up plastic trash can liners. And crumpled trash can liners in the case. But it worked like a charm.

Unless you pick it up yourself keep your fingers crossed..........I have experienced every one of these mishaps including being thrown over the wall, left at the garage door in plain sight, semi hidden in the bushes and like Chris I very rarely consider a large or fragile clock.
I concentrate now on smaller items that have a better survival rate.
Also items can be packed well but once they get in the hands of the shipper...............

I once bought a beautiful French pink marble clock. Sadly, it arrived as a pile of gravel. To get my money back, I had to send it back to the seller. Didn't make much sense to me...

Well been in contact with the seller and basically they stopped responding so I initiated a dispute with my credit card company. Trying to save the label is fruitless, it literally crumbles if you touch it. They made sure to show the label in the listing but acted as if it was not a big deal. They asked me what I thought was fair and I told them refund my original purchase and shipping and I'll pay the return shipping. No more responses.

That's pretty awful, blue insulation tape, seller clearly not into clocks and lacking any knowledge of how to pack and treat them just looking to make a quick buck.

I once bought a Haller clock mantle hat style clock from eBay, seller just shoved it in a box no support packing for case and movement he also put the pendulum and key inside so the whole lot was rattling around inside....many scratch and dents, when it arived the case survived but the movment completely ripped away from the case and bent all the hammers just loose inside the case, shocking, I don't buy clocks from eBay now unless the seller has many clocks listed and 100% feedback.

Good news for me they took the clock back. Probably bad news for the clock though. Except for the blue taped pendulum the clock was packed well. I think from now on I will take the advice here and ask for information on how they plan to pack.

I don't see how you can blame UPS for this damage.
