I have a slim Longines 17L 17 jewel pocket watch with the following inscription on the back: “To H. THOMPSON COMMEMORATING THE GOLDEN JUBILEE OF B.C. ELECTRIC RAILWAY CO. LTD. 1947”I contacted the Vancouver, British Columbia Archives and learned that the watch was one of fifty presented to long-services employees of the British Columbia Electric Railway at their 50th anniversary picnic on June 28, 1947. This particular watch was given to a Miss H. Thompson, Public Relations. The British Columbia Electric Railway operated an extensive network of streetcars and interurban electric railways in and around Vancouver. Another division was in Victoria. The company also furnished electric power to the vicinity. The streetcars were replaced by electric trolley buses which continue in a modernized form under public ownership. The passenger service of the interurban lines was abandoned in 1956 but diesel freight service continues under a different operator. Does anyone else have one of the fifty commemorative watches? It would be interesting to see if they are all the same Longines model.
